I have never called a farmer sir, Firstly i do my homework to find out the farmers sirname, then start with hello my name is ... could i speak to Mr .... or you can just ask is the farm owner around, make sure you are speaking to the right person from the start always helps. I was checking with one of my permission farmers and a chap turned up and called the farmhand sir and started a mass speach about himself to completely the wrong person, the next thing to come out of your mouth is i shoot for such and such as if he knows you shoot for a local farmer he is more likely to give you the time of day. If you don`t have any permission at all then be courteous and prove you have downe your homework by saying i noticed you wheat etc field along A249 or whatever has lots of pigeons etc and go from there, you never know you could have spotted what he has missed. Be possitive and courteous and don`t ramble.

Hi DM, I agree with Kevlar, do your home work first, farmers will not always give you permission there and then, as you will be a total stranger to them unless you already know them, I would get some shooting cards made up and hand him one when you talk to him, it will have your details on it, and will make you look more confident.

So if he does not give you permission there and then, he has something to hand to make him think about it and you may recieve a call later.

Below is a link where you can get cards made up, I got some and they are first class quality, cheap as chips, and the people who make them are first class, best of luck, I'm sure you'll get on ok. <_<

Cheers Bobbo

I look on yell.com for farmers and then make a list and give them a phone

I say that I have noticed a lot of crows on their land and would they like a hand controlling them <_< Mostly all farmers hate crows more than any other bird.

I think If you mention pigeon shooting at the start the farmer will think you are just after some sport for yourself

I have aquired a few farms with the crow method as many have said I have someone who shoots the pigeons but you are welcome to control the crows for me  this then usually leads on to them saying you might as well do the pigeons as well

jase.

I ask farmers I know to put in a word if possible.

Otherwise I try to spread sideways and start by saying "I shoot pests on Blah Blads land and have done so for X years, I wondered if you might like some of your rabbits/pigeons taken care of" or similar.... so Blah Blah is their neighbour or certainly close and likely to know them well.

I normally go in a with a more smoother tactic of

Get the kettle on, and what are yer daughters like?

:yes::lol::lol:

You find that once you get one farm others come easier are like a club they all know each other or know of each other, that really helps to be able to quote a current permission,

now to your problem, drive around around and look for pigeon predation its the best time as they all over the rape, find the out who owns the land and present yourself to him tell what you seen, he will know anyway and offer your services show him your insurance BASC (I hope) most times he will be happy for you to go and work from there with him.

I work an hours drive away from my home I had to go in yesterday to sort some grief out when coming home a 10.00am I was driving through a little village and a huge flock of them lift off from a rape field I saw a quad bike coming into view I pulled onto the verge flagged him down introduced myself and what I was about and offered my services, BINGO I got that field so Im there next week. ID go today but the missus will kill me although I could say I was visiting my mother <_< nah Id better not lol

i usually start with "sorry to bother you mate" as i don't really sound or look right calling someone sir "do you know of anywhere local where i might be able to get some rabbiting?" which usually they either say "no mate my land is all rented to a syndicate" which is the usual or "i haven but if you try mr ........ at ........." or "yes i've got some you can have a go at" they normally follow it up with asking where i have tried and tell them but explain i'm reasonably new to the area and am finding it difficult and talk about what guns i use and my insurance then they ask where did i live and the conversation carries on from there and usually they remember someone else i can try and when the conversation is over thank them for there help and time

to be fair its not been that succesful for me round here but its starting to pay off, i try to be my self and not be trying to make out i'm a super vermin controller, i explain that i usually like to get out a couple of times a week and i'll shoot anything thats legal and causing a problem but mainly shoot rabbit for dog food and the freezer and tend to leave it at what i can carry.

i always ask them if they'd mind me leaving my details with them incase anything come up in the future, i always carry loads of official police headed permission slips which i downloaded off the local forces website with all my details written down on the back from name, phone numbers and address to certificate numbers and basc members number, then apologise its such a large bit of paper, that way though they've always got a permission slip if they change there mind, i like using the police forms as they look official
