Rarerims
After managing to persuade myself that I *need* a pecking decoy, and then seeing some of the prices, I decided to have a go at making my own. as I seem to have a habit of collecting cars for breaking for spares, I raided a few windscreen wiper motors from various cars. I ended up using a Honda civic Windscreen wiper motor, made a prototype in the kitchen, much to the disgust of her indoors. Once i'd checked it worked in principle I ventured of to my workshop, and bodged something up My next plan is home made 'airpros' and a home made magnet. I have got the perfect material for the airpro wings just gonna try it, and i'll let you know if it works Just realised this is pointless without pics/video, will sort that in a bit Edited February 15, 2010 by Rarerims

Rarerims
Isnt the windscreen wiper motor a bit OTT for a pecker ? It was free I have some other motors on the way, but I wanted to get cracking with it In terms of being over the top, do you mean too much current draw? I am wiring it on a interval timer, so its 3 seconds on 3 seconds off (adjustable for both) As its only running half the time, and basically no load on the motor, I reckon it will be spot on I could be wrong thou
Pykie
Alright mate, we had a total of 17 pigeons and 10 crows on saturday, Kinky went up your end by the pen and had a few. Give me a buzz if you want a dead pigeon to try out your new contraption on, or just wait to shoot one yourself on saturday lol

Give me a buzz if you want a dead pigeon to try out your new contraption on, or just wait to shoot one yourself on saturday lol Hello mate! Mark told me you had 102 haha After looking at some of the pecking decks on the web I think this one looks a bit scrap heap challenge haha I see most of them are freestanding, with this one i'd have to dig a hole to drop the motor in haha Bare in mind this is a prototype, speed can be adjusted by changing the cam, this has three lobes' on it, if you go to 2 it would be slower The 'legs' were all I had hanging around to make it out of, for the final version I would make these hidden, under the body of the decoy, Also the wiper motor is big, hence needing to mount it under the decoy, with a small motor it would be easy to fit the motor inside and use a linkage to make it 'peck' With a cam thou, you can have it so each peck is 'different' just by having a higher peak on one lobe of the cam to the next. I have an interval timer, so it will run for a few seconds, then stop, and so on. Dont hold back if its **** i'll give up and go back to selling wheels hah Showing the cam and mounted motor Edited February 15, 2010 by Rarerims
humperdingle
I bought a couple of air-pro decoys the other day. They still need a reasonable gust of wind to turn the wings properly. So I was thinking about using the motor off a handheld fan... Any idea what i'd need to have it alternating on/off for 5 second bursts? Not sure if they will work with less than 12v (I guess you mean a 3volt fan?) but: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=25224 Thats what I have for the pecking decks When you say a reasonable gust, do you reckon they would work on a still day if on a magnet?? ie the spinning of the magnet moving them through the air would be enough to turn the wings? Bluebarrels
Ive made ,pigeons/crows peckers before, used motors from maplins, internet order only, easy enough to make but its a continual peck and not on a timer unit, normally run 3x decoys to a long wire off one 12v bty with a speed reducer ,they are very effective especially on crows/jackdaws and add movement in your decoy pattern, and weigh a lot less than a magnet/rotary BB

I wish i'd started with a smaller motor and made a linkage really I had to modify the cam to a 2 lobe, as it was too noisy with 3 Its quiet now, but doesnt move quite as realistically, the 3 lobe was pretty random, this is just like up and down I guess pigeons just need to see the movement rather than 100% realistic? Daz2381
I had a go with BB a while back and the motor part no was 918D100112/1 it is MFA como drills 100:1 12-24v D.C. from maplin I don't know if they are still the same ones but these are geared down so it isn't pecking like it is on speed!! Hope this helped Daz Try this link undefined Edited February 16, 2010 by Daz2381

George1990
Slow it down a little bit and put it in a hole and it will quite good won't it?

J I'd say on a magnet they'd definitely spin. To be honest, I probably just need a couple of rods to lift them up a bit. When they're close to the ground, the wind seems to subside greatly. Rarerims
Slow it down a little bit and put it in a hole and it will quite good won't it? Ive slowed it down and made it quieter What do you reckon? Gonna make a 'proper' one when the new motor arrives, but this was essentially free Made the feet a lot less obviously, slowed it down and put a lid on the 'box' Will spray it brown/green and it should be ok Edited February 16, 2010 by Rarerims

stubby
think that looks well rarerims, waterproof the box, spray it brown, should work a treat, get out and give it a test run
Imperfection
The slower one looks a lot more realistic. Your first attempt looked like it was head banging at an Iron Maiden concert.

Rarerims
no dragons den for a while !! I have made a good attempt at airpro wings Im going to do some 'neat' ones tomorow, I reckon the material Ive found you could make 100 pairs of wings for £16 I just have to work out what to use for a shaft (ooer) and it'll be sorted
