Making a Fox Caller.

OK Guys, following the requests that I got from the "Fox Caller" video I put up yesterday I have made this video to show you all how to make one. All you require is 2 pieces of part rounded beading about two and a half inches long, a small piece of VHS video tale and some phastic insulating tape. The only tools you will need are a small saw (I use a junior hacksaw), a pair of scissors and a stanley knife.

For those of you that have a habbit of losing or missplacing your caller when out you can easily use a little more insulating tape to fix your caller to a lanyard and carry it round your neck. The caller is small enough to hold between your lips to blow (Or suck) leaving both hands free for your rifle or shottie, very useful if, like me, you tend to go lamping alone.

Have a look at the video and let me know what you think!

Unfortunately the sound quality is not as good as I would have liked but that's because I am a cheapskate and the camcorder was a gift from my insurance company, oh well, beggars can't be chosers!

I mentioned towards the end of the video that you could tape one to a lanyard to save from losing it but I'm not sure if I explained it well enough so here's a photo of the one I made on the video fixed to a lanyard.

Hope this helps one or two of you out!

We like this, nice tip there fella...... :good:

I take at least 2 calls out with me and also use my fingers (the old keepers method) a call that you can use hands free makes more sense... you sometimes find they will move for one call but not another so having choice is important...

simple and cheap like an Essex girl.... and leaving all her 12 fingers free for shooting..... Fantastic

looks spot on that mate!

is there anything i can use instead of vhs tape? and will wooden pegs do the same job as the beading? as i've got neither

With regards to anything you could use in stead of VHS Video tape, I haven't tried myself but you could try a piece of Audio Cassett tape, it's a bit thinner so it might give a higher pitched "squeel", it's really down to trial and error.

Once again, I've never tried a clothes peg but why not? The wood does not have to be shop bought, you can use a piece of Hazel about two and a falf to three inches long and about half to three quarters of an inch in diameter split lenghtways down the middle. That would do exactly the same job.

Have to agree entirely with you there. When I go out for foxes I carry my Wam Caller and 2 of the callers I make (Both different pitches - I have made one of them that sounds a bit like a distressed hare) fixed to a lanyard round my nech so I have three "hands free options" plus I carry my mirror and polystyrene. It is a fact that where foxes are concerned what they move for in one field might not call them in when you try it in the next field.

As for Essex Girls, what sort have yopu been seeing that need 12 fingers, or do you just have very small hands? :good:

cheers mate, not got any cassettes either! i'm sure i'll find something though :good:

i'm not in too much of a rush at the minute as i've got a wam call and not doing any foxing, i've not got a 12b at the minute and would need to be right on it with the .410hushpower, so unless its within 20yrds i'll not shoot anyway so i've got time to experiment.

i've just broken my crow call trying to get the reed out of it only to realise its not suitable ??? so back to the drawing board!

Has your children any left over doll packaging from christmas, the boxes with the clear plastic front, this is excellent material, ive used it to replace the plastic strip in a well known caller after the strip became stretched with usage. Its excellent squeal material.

  • 1 month later...

I spotted this thread a few weeks ago and today have at last got round to making a couple.

I picked up some beading from Homebase, £4.99 for a 2m length (should get a few out of that!), found an unused blank VHS tape in the garage, (we don't have a vhs player anymore) and got to work with the hacksaw and scissors. 10 minutes later and 2 fox calls. I made one with 5 wraps of tape and one with 4 wraps, giving a slightly different pitch. Will experiment making some others a bit longer.

Going out tonight to try them, but they sound as good as any i've heard.

Thanks for the idea FrenchieBoy.
