chezza1986
Just been looking on the net and seen some decent 20bore shotguns for sale. Some are cheap and well used and some are tidy with a bit more of a price tag but nothing major. What I would like to know is besides the difference in weight and smaller cartridge size and weight what would the benifits be in having one over a 12bore?? Also what is the effective range and what type of choking should be used for the different demands?? Also what would be a good 20bore gun?? Side by side, over and under and what make?? Thanks Jack

Thanks Jack I find them to be quieter, just a clean bang instead of that rolling boom of a 12. When noise is sometimes an issue every little helps. I shot a crow stone dead last nght with a 28gram subsonic cartridge at a hell of a height with 1/2 choke so if you're on target range shouldn't be a problem
ShooterTom
My mate has a 20 bore and they will kill as well as a 12. I actually prefer shooting it to my 12... The main thing that puts me off is the price of the carts. last time i got him some they were £8.50 a box for 28g 6s RCs!!! He has a beretta silver pigeon over and under game gun which is very nice.. Hope this helps Tom
chezza1986
Cheers guys. I go on justcartridges and the price for smaller bore shells are just the same and sometimes more expensive that the standard 12bore, what's with that??? money grabbers. Thanks again. Daveo26
Its all about supply and demand, more people want 12 bore carts so they make more so they are cheaper. Look at .410 stuff, 9 grams of shot and they are still £6 a box!!!!

miroku4399
I have used my dads 20 bore benelli 3 shot auto quite a few times when i have been night shooting and i love it, it's quiet and light. I do find that the cartridges are quite expensive i use 28 grams and i find it does the same job as a 12 easily Cheers Shane
chrispti
They kill driven pheasants just as well as a 12b too
chezza1986
I might have to pinch my mates gun and have a go to see what one's like. My dad kept going on about how nimble and pointable they are and just got me intrigued. What type of size cartridges do you tend to use and what's the recoil like with them??? Thanks for the replys. djrwood
I shot harfordwmj's little beretta silver pigeon 20b when we went for a few clays the other day and loved it. Only had a few shots but it was so light and easy to shoot, plus i was hitting the clays just the same as when shooting the Urika2 12g. I think a 20b's on the cards for next gun once i got a few pennies free. Next time we go out ill bring my dads little single barrel 20 and we'll pop a few clays to see what u think. Jack Eley CT's 28g 6 shot plaswad are as good as any (24g 7 1/2 if you're on clays) nice crisp little cartridge and you can get em for £180 a thousand if you shop around
clayman
The main advantage lies purely in the forward weight of the barrels, and carrying weight. The shot load will do exactly the same work from any caliber. A disadvantage is in recoil, as the lighter the gun the more recoil is transferred not absorbed. If weight and recoil are reasons for thinking 20b, consider that you can get lower weight and better balance from a 12g semi with recoil absorbed by the action. In O/U Lincoln 20s are good value, but if the pockets deeper, think Silver Pigeon. Entry level is with Webley and Scotts. AYA or Ugatechea in S/S's, but not too many around. Cranfield
I use a 20b semi auto Benelli for most of my pigeon shooting and the 6lb weight is a pleasure to handle all day long. Being a semi the recoil isn't a problem, plus its also fitted with a good recoil pad. Using 24gm or 28gm of No6 shot, it kills all the birds that my 12 bores would kill.
