henry d Posted April 23, 2010 Report Share Posted April 23, 2010 Righty ho, I have removed the Artex from my kitchen ceiling and the sealer on the plasterboard is very flaky, is there some paint that will cover and fill the obvious patches where the sealer is missing ? ....or is it just a case of multiple coats of paint ? codling99 Posted April 23, 2010 Report Share Posted April 23, 2010 scrape off as much of the flakey stuff as you can,and either fill the lower bits with filler and sand flat or if its powdery you may have to get a stabilising soloution or unibond on there,personally being an artexer i normally reboard ceiling over the top and put coving up around edges to save messing around edge and tape and joint boards and repaint,cleaner in long run and all new. 100milesaway Posted April 23, 2010 Report Share Posted April 23, 2010 Wow reading this i thought i had better tell you of my experiance, having bought a bungalow 4 years ago. We didn't bother having a survey done as we had a good estate agent who advised us before hand of our problem ceilings which had made the last persective buyer to us back out, it didn't bother us because we loved the place so much.In a nutshell. the artex ceilings had ASBESTOS flakes in the mix, a common addition in the 70's, so be very careful.The options given to us were1: just leave it but dont ever drill into it. 2: Have it all knocked out with a asbestos specialist and re-plastered.3:Put false ceilings in and skim over, which is the option we choose, not cheap but we thought the least disruption and safest.. Good luck if you have already removed it , i hope it was asbestos free.I'm surprised in this day and age of health and safety, more information on this possible disastrous deadly concoction is not readily available. from Auntie. DSPUK Posted April 23, 2010 Report Share Posted April 23, 2010 Didn't have artex but all ceilings were bowed in the bungalow we bought last year due to burst pipes years ago - built in early 70's and jerry built so had plaster's in and they cross battened and re boarded all ceilings and skimmed them and also put coving up - really glad now as it was money well spent - all other bungalows in line have cracks round edge of plasterboard as the truss's are thin and a lot of fixing nails had missed trusses. Cheers, I can`t over board as there is coving up already and as I artexed it 18years ago it is fine no nasties. I suppose that I was looking for the easiest route and still want a good finish.
