Hotshotnot
Hi Guys, Just got myself a shotgun (and licence). I have a bit of land so want to get myself a clay thrower for some much needed practice. A road runs adjacent to the land on one side and houses about 50 to 100 yards away beyond that. So long as I shoot away from the road which is over open fields/woodland with no piblic access will I be legal? Are there ant rules regading distance from piblic areas? Dont want the plods turning up and sequestrating my assets? Cheers.
bramble
yes there are laws regarding distance from public hiways its 50 yards from any hiway.
SSS
yes there are laws regarding distance from public hiways its 50 yards from any hiway. The amount of times this is repeated is amazing! There is a law which states you must be 50 feet from the centre of the highway, but it only applies if you cause disturbance or nuisance. You can use your clay thrower, as long as you have permission.
Beardo
you may come foul of disturbance laws if you're banging away and someone in the houses complains though

Hotshotnot
Thanks Guys. The land is mine so I dont need to get permission. I will ensure I am more than 50 feet from the road. I wont shoot over the road so no one will be hurt. Noise - yes someone will complain, they move to the countryside and think it will be quiet. The club I am going to constantly get such complainants...As long as I dont shoot in anti social hours I should be OK on that one. Cheers guys, I shal look for a trap.. Billy.
Thanks Guys.Noise - yes someone will complain, they move to the countryside and think it will be quiet. It's all well and good saying that they'll complain and there's nothing they can do, but is this really the impression you want to bestow upon your neighbours? Be courteous and knock on their door. Say you are going to be doing a bit of clay shooting and that there will be a bit of noise. Reassure them that it'll not be 24/7. ..You never know, you might get some more land/opportunities/shooting buddy from that meeting. Just please don't go shooting away without a care in the world, as you'll just potentially turn someone who has no real opinion on shooters into a potential anti. Edited May 12, 2010 by Billy. Lez325
yes there are laws regarding distance from public hiways its 50 yards from any hiway. You mean 50 FEET from the centre of the Highway, surely??? Les
Hotshotnot
Lez, yes I believe it to be 50ft not 50m, although I will probably be 50m away. Billy, I agree with you and I will of course be as considerate as possible...it's my nature to be and I do care - thats why I want to know where I stand legally as well as environmentally rather just than getting into trouble. Thats why I'm asking first... However, no matter how much I butter them up there will be one or 2 complaints (out of about 15 houses). I could name them for you before I start! It's the same ones who persistantly trespass and ingore requests to stop their dogs shxxxing on my land and not even considering scooping the poop! The same ones who have no respect over other peoples hard eanned assets but then thats life I guess. Cheers PS Before you ask - shooting the dogs is not on my agenda . Vermincinerator
Be careful that you dont upset your nieghbours, a noise abatement order can stop you shooting on your own land. Ian.

Thanks Ian, I will be as considerate as is possible so I think I will be OK. The shoot where I will go has a neighbour no more than 50 yards away. He has tried every legel approach to get the shoot shut down (nothing to do with me - I've just joined but heard the stories). His solicitor has advised him to drop it as there is no legal basis. There are up to 30 guys on each shoot so thats a lot of noise compared to what I will create. There will be just me and my mate for an hour or two once or twice a week at most and never during unsociable hours. I really don't want to be a nuisence but I have rights too. Cheers. Slug
I wouldn't know where to look I am sure someone on here is much better clued up but I thought there was a planning or noise law that you can shoot 12 times a year without planning permission ? I belong to 2 clubs that shoot on this basis, and when I asked can we shoot every week...The answer was no because of the above..Be good to have a definitive answer on that. Hotshotnot
i think its 28 days a year, with out planning It seems you are right - 28 days. I dont know if that relates specifically to running a club or whether that would also apply to me shooting privately on my own land?
