Catamong
I was certainly impressed with The Fennes, a lot of good targets there. By the Essex boys own admission, me and Anni were only shown the "good" targets , but there were loads of them That ground could definitely put on a good challenging registered shoot, with the stands that we saw, mixed with a few gimmies that we didn't see, there would be something for everyone. Very good high tower too and they made good use of it, serving interesting birds to several stands. I don't know why they don't do it, as MC says there must be a reason. Yes, there is a reason...................THEY CAN'T OPEN ON A SUNDAY, so they're stuffed, basically. And here I was thinking the Manc boys were a tad smarter than the Essex boys.? Cat. Clacton Gun Club hold plenty of registered shoots on a SATURDAY Still when you have been in this game as long as CAT you will still know **** all about anything. MC
Some parts of the Country are literally spoiled for choice, in the Midlands there are probably a dozen grounds within a 50 mile radius of Derby that regularly run Registered Sporting shoots, but the closer you get to civilization, (i.e. London), the fewer they become. There isn't a single ground in Herts that runs regular Reg Sporting shoots, but that's not the fault of the CPSA, let's face it, it's far easier to run a "biff" shoot for the benefit of muppets without the hastle of having to provide proper regulation targets, trained scorers and actually have to pay back some prize money to the punters. Running Registered shoots is aggro for the ground owner, he has to make a judgement as to whether the payback to him is worth that aggro, it's as simple as that. Some grounds do it very successfully, others are quite happy to provide a boring "straw bale" shoot with a load of floppers on the end of the barrel which they know will appeal to the newbies, it's their choice. Cat. You are absolutely spot on with your comments (And that is meant to be sarcastic) I remember the last shoot at JJ's I went to, they were using extra large clays that broke at the sound of a gunshot. They didn't need to be hit at all. Although everyone of them was on the end of your barrel anyway and they were so easy that everybody including 3 people who had never held a gun before came away with a straight 100/100. If it is aggro for the ground owners to run registered shoots then why oh why don't the CPSA do something about it and actively encourage the grounds to do it? Is it because they aren't really interested in clay shooting for the masses at all and as long as they have enough money to pay Boakes's severance and the chairmans inflated salary and still have a bit left over for sandwiches at the Board meeting then everyone is happy. MJN
I shoot at Fennes most weeks, and have reasonble scores avoiding the 'gimme' training stand does that mean Hodnet won't be any harder and my scores will be presentable on the 29th South beat North Day ? beretta
a lot of the larger grounds around the country are capable of running a 100 bird registered shoot and a 100 bird shoot for none members at the same time. 2 seperate 100 birders that will not interfer with each other. you would still need the refs for the reg shoot but non members can mark there own on the other shoot. yes, the need more traps to do this but think of the entries they could get running 2 shoots. Absolutely Beretta, So the big question on everyones lips is why don't they? If someone said to me that you could earn twice as much money with a little bit of extra effort then I would do it. However if it involved a load of politics and grief so it would be a headache I would carry on with what I was doing. Therefore surely the answer is for the so called Goeverning Body of Clay shooting to step in and make it easier for the grounds.

Clacton Gun Club hold plenty of registered shoots on a SATURDAY Still when you have been in this game as long as CAT you will still know **** all about anything. Oh, here we go again.................. They don't run Reg Sporting shoots on a Sarturday, even you should be able to figure out why..?? It costs a lot less to run a Reg Skeet / Trap shoot than it does a Sporting event........Doh. Cat.

You stated that the FENNES couldn't as they aren't allowed to open on a sunday. Why is that a restriction? It may well cost less to run a skeet / trap shoot but that isn't the issue, and I am guessing that they get far more entries in a sporting shoot so more entries equals more income so you can afford to put one on. shaun4860
Just to get it back on track.... In Northumberland we have Bywell, Registered Premier ground ABT/DTL/Double rise/Skeet. SteveSmiths are a registered Premier ground but dont seem to run any registered shoots any more (so how they can be a premier ground escapes me) For registered Sporting the nearest is Spennymoor in Durham. shaun

If you can build a good score on the tougher stands at The Fennes, you will probably find THIS SHOOT at Hodnet easier. They can put tough shoots on for registered comps or things like the English Open, but they seem to have a tamer, though interesting course, for charity dos and other events such as our North v South day. There's a lot more stuff in among the trees than at The Fennes, but it doesn't sound to me as though you will struggle

Looks like I'll might improve on my 33/100 ;-) Thanks Chard.
