Early morning.

I was out this morning at 03:15 for a stalk around an area planted with Cabbage to see if I could get myself a buck.

As soon as I got out of the truck I could see a big buck couched in the grass just 100 yards away! I stalked up to about 60 yards and could have taken a neck shot off the bipod but I have to admit to getting a bit of the old shakes and wasn't happy taking the shot! I gave a couple of barks and the buck got up and ran 20 meters to just below a ridge across the field and stood broadside. I could see a couple of feet of shallow backstop above his back before the skyline but decided not to take the shot, knowing how bullets can exit at funny angles. It's a shame because he was a medal class buck for sure. I hope to catch up with him another time.

I'd only gone about 300 yards when I spotted another buck and a doe out feeding on the new cabbage plants. After a short stalk I dropped him on the spot with a heart shot at about 150 yards.

On my way back to the truck I spotted another buck and doe in the next cabbage field and stalked around to get a shot at him. I got to about 60 yards and dropped him with a high heart shot.

I'd spotted 3 bucks and 2 does in less than half an hour and it wasn't even 04:00!!!

Both bucks had big bloated bellies full of veg. I then spent the rest of the morning shooting bunnies with the rimmy. Happy days!

Cheers,

Mark.

Really enjoyed that, congratulations on getting those two, farmer must be happy, presumably when they graze they take chunks out of lots of different cabbages rather than focus on individual plants, I can imagine how quickly the damage would become very costly!

Thanks guys.

I rarely take clients onto this bit of ground as it has a lot of dog walkers and the odd horse rider going about it. You have to be there at first light to see any deer so at this time of the year it's ideal. This is the only bit where I go heavy on the deer as the farmer doesn't want any there at all. Having said that I'll usually only shoot 7 or 8 deer off it in a year, so this morning wasn't the norm.

The Roe seem to prefer the cabbage when it is in it's mid stages of growth, I've watched them pull the whole plant up. They grow lots of different varieties here and some they don't seem to bother with.

The Rifle is a CZ 550 Lux in 22-250 with a Luger 3-12x52 30mm scope, I haven't had to adjust the zero for 4 years, it's still spot on. I use Sako Gamehead 55g SP factory loads and get thumbnail groups at 100 meters.

Cheers,

Mark.
