Ferretboy111
Went ferreting today, took my small jill and mental hob out! Managed to get 13 my personal best, they all bolted apart from some that didnt have a chance to bolt beautifully and the purse nets caught them an absolute treat! Also at the end of the day we were doing one largish 15 holer warren in which we had to wait and wait and wait for my hob to return however he didnt, so i located down, and dug, and there he was! reached in retrieved him, then one rabbit, then another, and another, and another, 4 rabbits in a stop end was such good fun shame it had to end at 4. Cranfield
Well done, sounds like a great day. I woke up this morning and saw that white frost and thought what a good ferreting morning it was, "regrettably" we were expecting visitors today, so I was going nowhere. I love it when the ground is really frozen and you can listen to them running around, sometimes you know in advance which net they are going to hit. old rooster
We had a good day as well, 31 nice bunnies in the bag and very little digging, frosty start followed by good winter sun. Had one particularly interesting bury; 5 holes in a dry ditch, netted up, put in my polecat jill who went through the lot with not a sign of a bunny. Put her back in the box and set our new hob in, bunny out straight away with hob hot on its heels with a gob full of fur. Put him back in, two more almost straight away from different holes, netted back up and put him in again. Bunny comes to the net and gets dragged back before it could bolt, bit of a wait then out comes the hob, no sign of the last rabbit so put him back in. Couple of minutes later I see a rabbit appear in the mouth of one of the holes, put my hand in and it's stone dead, the hob had killed it and dragged it out to the hole ! He's only young (this years) but shaping up very nicely.
Frank
That Hob sounds like a cracker, well worth holding on to. It seems harder to get good working stock these days as more of them get bred for pets.
Ferretboy111
I shall tell ye this, all my ferrets are show ferrets/pet ones all bar 2 have one prizes and i adore them all. However this no way means that they dont work half as good as ferrets from working stock, all my ferrets bar the 3 that are too young all work beautifully and have bolted and killed no end of rabbits, also my hobs are all castrated and they all still work just like any whole hob. Just to put a few myths to bed. ALEX

fiascoshooter
I have been told that spun nylon nets will tangle less than the 6z nylons we have at the moment. Does anyone agree/disagree that they will be any better or maybe even get some hemp? Can anyone tell me where either can be bought at right money? Thanks. Ferretboy111
I have 20 hemp nets and 10 nylon bought ones, the hemp are sooooo much better at A. catching rabbits and B. they handle and tangle so much less, i save the nylon ones for holes out in grass. dogsnuts
Just make sure you hang and dry after you use them and you will get a few more years use out of them, i hang mine in the garage.
old rooster
I like to make my own hemp nets, that way you can be sure of the material quality used and the quality of the knots. Not difficult to do, there are other postings on the technique here on the forums. I make mine tapered now, more economical on materials, quicker to make and less bulky to carry, you won't buy them made that way though. Nylon nets come into their own when used in flail cut blackthorn hedges That said all my long nets are nylon as the sheer bulk of 100 yards of hemp net is too much to handle IMHO.
