Colster
Put in for a variation about 6 weeks ago, finally all sorted and have slots added for .223, .243 and HMR First to dent the bank account was the HMR, which I picked up last Friday, slapped a Hawke Endurance 30IR scope on and Saturday went out to one of my permissions (in the rain) to zero. With that done, I had to wait until last night to take it out to introduce it to old Peter. Met up with my shooting buddy and decided to have a little drive round before parking up on one of the far pastures. As we approached a junction in the farm track I said to my mate to pull up as I'd seen bunnies down the path on previous visits and if I crawled to the corner I could possibly snipe one. "No", he said, "I wanna see this in action". He drove up to the junction and at the bottom of the path sat a rabbit, 95 yards on the range finder, I opened the landy door and resting the rifle on the door took aim and "crack" one dead bunny. "Blow me", said my mate (or words to that effect), "it doesn't mess about does it." After a couple more bunnies joined it, I passed it to my mate and I took the driver's seat. As we rounded the edge of a small wood, there sat 3 rabbits enjoying the evening sun. My mate has always been a bit sceptical about HMR's as he felt the noise would mean you'd get one rabbit and that would be it. I'd said that there was also the counter theory that the "crack" is coming from a long way away so maybe the rabbit wouldn't feel endangered and as the round is frangible it doesn't make such a loud thump on impact (what I often feel with the LR/FAC Air scares them away). I think his negative thoughts were laid to rest once he'd shot all three without one of them flinching! Finished up the evening with 12 rabbits, with my longest being 140yards, it's like shooting with a "lay-zor" and absolutely no runners, they were all very dead after meeting Mr V-Max. There's still a place in my cabinet for the LR and it will still be my main lamping gun but for a summer's evening laying up, I am loving the hummer. Now for some gun porn, here's some hot twins! Frenchieboy
Nice one Colster! You will find it hard to think about picking up an other gun for "sniping" rabbits now you have a "Hummer"! 2 or 3 rabbits close together one after the other at around 100 yards is no problem with a SAK moderator on the HMR, they just don't seem to hear anything. It would be interesting to know exactly what they do hear at that range, especially if there is a bit of wind blowing! To be fair, it was nearer 45yards with nothing more than a slight breeze, they were quite young but not kits so old enough to know better. I think as the bullet impact doesn't make a lot of noise there's no perceptible danger close to the rabbits - apart from their dead mate with his head missing. bicykillgaz
nice shooting mate i'd be intrested to have a go with a hmr i've always been a sceptic due to the noise but it's obviously not as bad as i imagine, aren't the rounds about twice the price though? lovely looking guns, i want a synthetic stock for my varmint but the only ones i can find are tactical stocks for £250 think i'll leave it at that price! Colster
nice shooting mate i'd be intrested to have a go with a hmr i've always been a sceptic due to the noise but it's obviously not as bad as i imagine, aren't the rounds about twice the price though? ..and some, I paid £3.50 for 50 Winnie Subs for the LR and £9 for 50 Hornady V-Max. I try not to think how much more they are than LR rounds but rather how much less than centrefire ones.

I havn't bought any for quite a while but I am sure they were about £12.00 last time I did. Dave
ace32
my last lot, last month were £11.50 a box and thats blue tips, but we allways end up paying more to the throat rippers up here, ian
Frenchieboy
I'm getting my Hornady Blue Tips for £10..00 per box which I think is pretty reasonable. I'm without my 17HMR for today as it is away getting shortened, re-crowned and re-threaded (Took it in yesterday and get it back tomorrow - Not bad for £35.00 all in) - Can't wait to get it back tomorrow, I think I'd rather be without the wife than my "Hummer"! pegasus bridge
i think the extra cost of HMR rounds is usually justified by the high kill ratio (for me anyway) - the hmr gets used 80%of the time, i find if the rabbits are very close together (as in a few yards) - its better to shoot them in the chest as this seems to put them straight down without nerves kicking in - i find with headshots the bunny often flips and kicks for a bit - and this scares anything very close by - nice shooting
