lurcher types?

Right then...........

at the risk of upsetting/ boring people or going over old ground I have a query for you all,

I would like opinions about lurcher type, and suitability for me and my needs,

Quarry...

I will be mainly using it for rabbits but want it to be capable of taking fox's (etc) too.

the dog....

Idealy it would be calm, not too hyper, fairly easily trainable, able to mix with other dogs and people, but can turn it on when needed.

well socialised goes without saying but i guess that would be down to the breeder.

Me....

I will be training it myself, bearing in mind I have trained dogs before but only basics, never trained working dogs let alone a lurcher.

I know I'm asking a lot ( maybe too much) but hey.... you gotta try,

as always any info would be great,

and Lastly....

if anyone knows of any such lurchers available, I want one.

idealy a bitch pup, but any age considered, I'm in the West Midlands but willing to travel for the right pooch,

thanks guys,

yis, V

VD

Don't we all mate

..................................

What you want is an all rounder . There's more than one way to skin a cat , but you want it mainly for rabbits . Forget fox , hare and deer as it's illegal !

So lets see Rabbit dog .. mmmm Collie cross choke cough , ugg . EERRR Whippet cross , i don't like em so i'll let somebody else tell you about them .

Terrier cross's will do what you want but maybe far too game on the rabbits . I say this from first hand knowledge , the boy was fine on rabbit , up until the point he needed to chomp . Now thats all he does "chomp" on all forms of rabbits .

Good luck in your quest !!

all the best yis yp

I had the same dilema, Wanting a lurcher for the first time to work alongside my terriers and ferrets, I went for a 3/4 greyhound 1/8th Beardie 1/8 Border collie bitch, Great little pup, training is coming along a treat, great with kids, my terriers etc. Each to their own, and I am sure with a little patience she will work out fine for me,

All I know about lurchers, doesn't amount to much. The little that I have learned from those on here, and what I learned from running a bitch by the name of Kita, whom belonged to a mate of mine before he moved.

However for what you want I was going to suggest a greyhound x collie or grey hound x beardie. Although the more I think on it the more I like Rushy Lads combination of all three.

Just remember what I know and a two pound note is still only good for two pounds....

With me being a total new comer to the world of running dogs and after having working terriers( totally different kettle of fish I Might add) for over 20 years I was given countless advice on lurchers from kelpie types through to Bull crosses, to first cross whippet greyhounds but after seeing a collie cross work alongside a ferret and on the lamp I made my mind up that to get near to what I wanted this would be the lurcher for me. Some swear by them and some are against them but it would be a sad world if we were all the same.

for ye bunnies......cant beat an nice small sturdy Beddling terrier / wippet cross.

for larger stuff, or a larger breeds, 3/4 grey hound - 1/4 bull cross will give you cracking looking dog perhaps on a tad the tall side upto 25" to the shoulder, naturally the dog will have greyhound stature, but will be a bit more muscled up..... great dog!!

Well.... I'm in talks with someone on another site who's got a cracking looking proven working bitch, just had a litter of pups to an equally fine looking proven sire, I've seen photos of both the dam and sire and the pups

I'm taking the huge drive up to Cumbria on Monday,

I'll keep you posted,

A dog that prodominantly is for rabbits and is going to be bright and trainable you are probably best of with a whipet collie, either 50 50 or 3/4 whippet 1/4 collie. The collie will bring strength of leg and trainability to the party with the whippet bringing the speed and agility. Rabbit country can be a bit to hard on pure bread whippets spindley little legs and ligaments. Greyhound cross will be ok but probably a bit big sacraficing the speed of the turn that is vital on the bunnies. It might also be worth considering the bedlington whippet x as well, not my thing but each to their own. When picking from a litter of 50 50 pups I would go for the sleeker looking pups so you get the extra pace.

As for fox I am to protective of my Little Lurcher to allow her to get injured on a fox. I would prefer to Shoot themI know plenty of guys with similar sized dogs that took them before the ban! Most lurchers over 35lb will hammer fox. a big fox only weighs 20lb ish.
