shakin stevens
you have a few itx and itm plus bismuth as mentioned, they will all work with old barrels which are not steel proofed, and tighter than half choke, i would still check the wads in some cartridges as they can be a bit on the tight side for some old guns. Scully
If your gun is not choked tighter than 1/2 fergie, there's no reason you can't put steel through it.I have an unproofed gun also, but the only reason I don't/can't put steel through it is because it's choked full.As long as it's unproofed rather than 'out of proof '.You can always ask your local gundealer for further advice re'the proof aspect. clayman
While some guns are sold steel proofed - its simply a proofing option and pretty well any modern gun is going to pass. As it costs more to have a steel proof done. You often find that importers select some guns to batch test and sell as steel proofed, while the rest are just lead proofed and are able to be sold a bit cheaper as the costs are lower. Check out the make and model of your gun, and research this and any clones ( many guns are exactly the same but branded differently according to importer). You may well find your type is available on the market both lead or steel proofed, and if thats the case you can be pretty sure your would also pass muster if submitted. As advised, don't use steel on more than 1/2 choke. If its an older gun, particularly a thinner barrelled S/S, then be cautious and dont use steel without prior proofing. Magus69
The cheapest alternative would be tin you can use it in any gun through any choke with any wad,but and I will emphasise the but the mass is much lower than all the other types available so has much less stopping power at comparative ranges. borntoshoot
sorry to hi-jack the thread but is it okay to shoot tungsten through a non steel proof gun? Reason I ask is because someone is buying me a box of tungsten for this weekend and my gun isnt steel proofed. will it be okay to use in my gun?
