Home Guard
Can someone reccomend a good all round cartridge for everyday use? Clays Pigeons Rabbits Preferably low cost and fibre wad. Jacob,
Imperfection
There isnt such thing as general use-unless MC posts a picture of his infamous universal cartridge. Why not buy some Eley firsts for clays and something like Kent Velocitys in 6's for everything else. Both are cheap and less than a fiver a box. Jacob, B) three words for you...can of worms!!! id say eley firsts 6's, others may say different. you will need 6's for the rabbits and possibly the pigeons but clays are normally 7.5's.cheaper to pick up sometimes too. not always practical to have an all-rounder..even though the theory is great! Floating Chamber
D & J if you could get them in 61/2! Edited September 30, 2010 by Floating Chamber
sitsinhedges
An ounce of 7's would suit most situations reasonably well
wisecobandit
Eley hb pigeon 6 1/2 shot. 30 & 32g load so to heavy for "official" clay shooting tho but i wouldnt be tempted in shooting rabbits with 28g of 7 shot.My opinion only and others will no doubt disagree.... It's a compromise to be sure, it has to be to justify the all round tag, but would kill a bull stone dead at close range so wont have a problem with bunnies if you keep the ranges sensible I just think it's ideal for clay pigeons and wood pigeons together. wisecobandit
I agree with you sitsinhedges. I would hazard a guess that Homeguard is quite new to the game tho as unfortunatly there is no real "all round" cartridge that suits everything. The other downside with cartridges is also what my gunshops sell here may not be available somewhere else altho the common likes of eley/kent/gamebaore tend to be widely available everywhere. manxman2
Eley impax, i loved em, 7s down an improved cylinder or quarter choke, 6s in the back trigger so to speak.
Billy.
I'd say 30g of 6's Edited September 30, 2010 by Billy.
Ashbiker
I would say 21 gm 71/2 for clays and 30gm of 6's for game!
Billy.
I would say 21 gm 71/2 for clays and 30gm of 6's for game! Sounds like an ideal 'all round' cartridge.

Floating Chamber
Why is it that I had all the pigeon I wanted in the 1960s, with less than half an ounce of lead from a .410 and we now shoot 28 -32 grams in the air to kill with 3 pellets? Alycidon
Eley Grand Prix (30gr) or Impax (28gr). Both felt wad, both designed for all round use. I have used both for almost 50 years, cut my teeth on them, ventured away for a few years but came back a couple of years ago. Shot size depends on quarry and distance, 7s under 30 yards with open chokes, 6s up to about 40 yards, 5s up to about 45 yards. 30gr of 5s are my load of choice, anything hit with them is always dead in the air, I used to get a lot of runners with 7s and quite a few with 6s. Anything hit and flying on hit with 5s will be picked up dead where it lands. A
