Dropping clays

I seem to be having problems with this type of target. I missed all of them on Sunday :good:

The high right to left looping crosser was ok but by the time I'd hit it the midi that came over the trees from behind had run out of steam and was dropping. I couldn't hit it at all! ??? The same happened the other week on a different set up but again I missed all the dropping clays.

Any advice?

I have been coaching on dropping targets today.

Remember it is the only clay target that is actually accelerating.so the lead opens the longer you leave them.................until they land.

:good:???

Don`t even think about using swing through but use maintained lead. Get out there what you think is a little too far as it`s usually spot on. Don`t let the clay get near the barrels at all.

Double the lead yu are giving them, i.e.shoot to miss.

You have to go a lot more under than you think to hit the bird, they are dropping pretty fast.

without more info on this particular target it really baffles me how people can give you advice on how to shoot it. most are presuming they know exactly what it is like. no mention of distance, speed, or angle, so you could possible be shooting to 'much' underneath it. thats changed the goalposts a bit.

You are of course correct, until you see the actual target, more importantly the sight picture perceived at the muzzles, then it is a very subjective topic.

There could be a multitude of reasons for the miss apart from incorrect amount and application of lead. Gun mount, stance, balance, head lifting, looking at the rib to reference lead (I'll bet thats a strong contender for some of them misses when the lead is unknown) too long a forehand limiting the drop of the gun etc., etc. etc.

As a VERY general observation dropping targets are underlead. So most of the abover answers are kind of helpful.

Unless he is overleading. :D

Absolutely.

They sound like a simo pair, so without seeing them what's to say it wouldn't be easier to shoot the midi first?

Nope! The first clay was just about to go behind a tall tree as the midi came into sight over head. The stand was in a small clearing so very limited options
