Dunkield
Well we asked for the section and now we have it so... Here is my first build, hopefully first of many this one was commissioned for mrs stuartp - so if you think the design is unconventional speak to her OK, I took it step by step so bear with me. Fist stage was get a pattern that seemed to work with the piece of buffalo horn, it started like this: Edited January 27, 2006 by stuartp
Dunkield
The pattern looked like this: Edited January 27, 2006 by stuartp
Dunkield
as I wanted it to be right I made a template out of a bit of rough sawn 2x2 I had laying arround Edited January 27, 2006 by stuartp
Dunkield
Then the hard work started! Using a saw and a rasp, we got to here resonably quickly, it was obvious at this point that bending wasn't going to be required, which was a relief for a first effort. Dunkield
As recommended I went down through the grades of emery paper, and then onto wire wool, then wire wool+ brasso, then just cloth and brasso. The finished item was glued onto a 'shank' that bought ready dried and straightened as I can't wait for 2-3 years.. I drilled both the shank and the handle and shoved a piece of 8mm threaded rod up the centre, bit of araldite and a bit more finishing and..... VOILA! Dunkield
So there you have it. If a complete duffer like me can do it anyone can, have a go you may surprise yourself I am going to rest my fingers for a week as they are red raw with sanding and polishing (soft office worker these days) and then start on the big one - my stick
flash
nice, looks good, hope she likes it and after all the effort might try one of my own flash

tenbears10
Wow Stu that is great for a first attempt. I used a bit of buffalo horn in a knife handle once and it didn't end up nearly as shiney as yours. More sanding next time I think.

TBT, What I learnt was to go down slowly through the grades (or up I guess if you are talking numbers) The shine is just for show, buffalo seems to be softer in the middle than towards the outside, so the stick has marks on already from being knocked. Once you get down to about 400 grade or so, you can then jump over to 0000 wire wool, after that just plain old elbow grease and metal polish seems to do the trick. I am going to use wood for the handle of the next one, as the smell of the horn gets to you after a while
