PhilR
I've been considering going back to a Land Rover vehicle for some time. I owned a Range Rover through the 90's which gave me a lot of fun and but considerable lightened my bank balance :o . I had thought about a P38 diesel, as I can't stretch to the later model, and thanks to Mr Potter and Dr W for sharing their experiences with me However, I've decided to go the Discovery route and am putting a deposit on a 2002 52 plate facelift TD5 ES auto. It is for sale in a local independent LR specialist, it's a one owner car with 59k on the clock. It looks in good condition and everything works at the moment. I hope I've done the right thing but only time will tell, I've never felt so nervous about buying anything before

At about 180K the fuel injectors will need changing, new they are expensive (300 each) but you should be able to find some used ones about. I put a set of Grabber AT2s on it, it goes anywhere, pulls big trailers and does 90 on the motorway if I need to. The Grabbers have done about 80k so far and look like they have another 20k plus in them. There is an issue with oil making its way by capilery action up an electrical cable to the engine managment ECU and filling the ECU with oil, just get that checked out. Oil is ECUs is expensive. Birdy
The replacement loom and plug that CAN get affected with oil is about £40 so don't panic. I had it on my Defender TD5.
John_R
I have a few minor niggles with mine, but I think the Disco TD5 is a great car. What did yours cost?
norfolk boy
TD5 disco the best truck i have had the pleasure of owning, tow's 3+ tons easy. the injector loom is an easy fix and as mentioned about £40 for parts. I've had the guys at TD5 alive fiddle with mine and is so much better. If you get any problems the landrover forums are more then useful. Don't worry it'll be grand and have fun

Mr Potter
Evening Philr, Congrats on the impending purchase, I'm sure you've done the right thing, I remember when that facelift model was released, most of the off-road motoring journalists rated it as better in all aspects than the P38. IMHO the Disco 3 and the latest RRs are in a different league when it comes to on road luxury and sheer presence but they probably aren't any more capable off road (and anyway how many of us get anywhere near the limits of our 4x4s. If you do get to explore those limits check that yours is fitted with the optional lockable centre diff, if it isn't I think it can be retro fitted. Norfolk Boy's advice is sound, trawl those forums for all the tips, help, advise & recommendations that you will ever need. I'm sure in a few years time you'll be posting on here that the 2002 Disco is the best 4 x 4 x Far. Mr Potter PS If you really did take heed of my advise you'll be the first in 59 years
PhilR
Evening Mr P, Us 59 yo's have to stick together, we've a wealth of experience and are worth listening to, that is until we start rambling and reminiscing about the good old days There's been some discussion on one of the LR forums that some td5's actually have the centre diff lock installed but the linkage mechanism wasn't fitted so it is a relatively easy job to retro fit that bit. Others don't have the centre diff lock installed at all, guess which one mine will be  I'm collecting it on Wednesday but will go over on Tuesday and find out and I want to get under it whilst it is on the ramps, must take an umbrella to protect me from the dripping oil. gixer1
I had a 52 plate td5 face lift, it was fantastic for the 55,000 miles I had it for, the only thing it needed was a hub replaced due to a wheel bearing (it's easier to fit a whole hub) and I removed the ace in favour of arb and you would never know it, I only sold mine because it was over 100k miles, and I changed it for a D3 which I would have to say is alot better on and off road but it should be for the price, and I find I'm more worried about damaging it than the td5. Whoever said the td5 is a better drive must be joking - they are ok but when I drove mine the 80 miles to trade it for my D3 I thought I'd gone deaf when I drove my D3 back as all the noise had gone!
