RED STAG STALKING

Hi Guys just a few pics from my and CP's Stalking trip in Scotland 2 weeks ago.

Had 5 days away stalking, weather was very mild and the rut had still not started very much.

CP and i had a few good stalks together and some great memorys.

It was our first time in the highlands and very dif to woodland stalking. We were walking a good ten mile a day up and down the glens stalking the Deer, it was hard work but very rewarding.

When i stalked my 6 pointer we had just finnished a long hike and was very hot, i left CP up on the ridge and i crawled some 200 yards along and down through the heather getting to within 60 yards of the hinds but about 180 yards from 1 of 2 stags the other was about 220 yards away and a nice 10 pointer. We had been told we were not to take any shots further out than 180 yards and only heart lung as we were only useing .243 and they didn't want any lost deer. I layed up and had to wait 1 1/2hours for the 6 pointer to stand up during this time it was raining and the cold had truly set in and i was shivering. CP was just about to give up and scream that he couldn't take any more as he was exposed to the wind and rain more than i as he was up on the ridge, when he heard the boom & thwack as i let off the 100 grain home load into the engine room of the stag. The land owner being a fell runner and not able to get the quad to the Deer tide a rope around the antlers and ran the stag down the glen for about 3/4 of a mile to the track and the waiting quad

On the last day CP was first gun and got sight of a nice 8 switch pointer down one of the glens and a hour latter had bagged his best Stag of the trip. I was next up and boy was it worth while. After a stalk of about 500 yards through peat bogs then crawl through the heather of about 150 yards i got myself onto a great 10 pointer but he was still 200 yards away. It was great watching him roaring to the other stags that we could hear around the end of the glen. He then got to his feet and scented the air picking up the smell from one of his 30<40 hinds with him. She got to her feet and walked straight towards me brining the Stag with her. He got to within range at 175yards, the hind ran away from him. He turned broadside and let out an almighty roar, then walked a few yards giving me a shot as there were no longer any hinds behind him. CP had fallen asleep some 200 yards away not wanting to spoil the stalk. He was woken by the sound of my .243 and then the delayed impact sound of the bullet as it hit its target just behind the right shoulder. He waited a few mins to see if a follow up was needed but i gave him a call as the Stag had run on some 30 yards and dropped.

CP congratulated me and then slatted as he came face to face with such a great head :drinks: , Done you again CP

Hope you like the pics

Regards

PM , as you now know why I call myself Catcherpelt, there are several different species that put me ahead of you, but each time we have shared the same species you always have to do one better .:lol: A trip to remember, I still have my cold that I pick up waiting 3000 feet up on the highlands with my old mate wind rain and the cold , the conditions were not far from the series 71 decrees under. ( it felt like it at the time ). for both of us the stalking together was the high light of this trip. good write up
