gjuk1985
Hello, I was a member on here a while back but decided to leave. I've joined back up again to pick your brains and get opinions on what gun I should buy. I've had an SGC now for 18 months or so and recently put in for my FAC, a 22LR and 17 HMR. Having been approved this now, I'm looking for a gun. REason for Gun I am currently looking at buying a 22LR to start with. I've used air rifles a lot in the past but this would be my first rifle. As I understadn the 22LR is a good gun for rabbits which is what I want to start with. Budget: I'm looking to spend around £800 all in, gun, scope and moderator. Guns I've seen I like te look of CZ 452 22LR. So is there anything comparible to this around the same sort of price? One thing I'm need confirming is, other than ease of use, are there any reasons not to go for a semi auto, or are bolt actions better? Thanks for any tips and advice! Billy.
Thanks for any tips and advice! Jon back I think you've chosen a good rifle, but what I'd go for is something like a Brno .22LR, which is basically identical to the CZ but about half the price. Use the extra money to buy a nice Swaro or S&B scope. Optics really do count. And at least if you decide to splash out £800 on an Annie or whatever later in life, you'll have a lovely bit of glass to put on top of it I bought a S/A as my first .22 and I wish I hadn't. Bolt action is by far my favourite and in all honesty, if you're shooting a S/A at a load of bunnies, you're spending time checking the rabbit you shot is dead and where it dropped, in that time you'd have time to reload a bolt action. vampire
Cz is a cracking gun,i went from AA 410 .177 to a cz .22lr 20" american and am so chuffed,it does it all with no problems just like the AA but with no hold over and a bit more range, get a sak mod,use eley subs, and you not going to be shooting deer so most 50mm ob scopes will do,i have had hawke and bushnell&banner on there at mo both are good for rabbit shooting, watch your backdrop as it WILL richochet like a mad thing. In an ideal rabbit shooting type of world we would have 22 fac air,.22 rimfire,.17hmr and thats what i am after to add to the cz and .223 so i will have it all covered for my shooting
Shropshire_Lad
Hi Jon, you won't go wrong with a cz or Brno, either is fine. What kind of ground do you shoot over? the reason I ask is I've had to sell my .22 as the no. of ricochets was silly, not good with cattle and sheep all around me. The .22lr is a great round to use if your land suits it. atvb Paul.
malkiserow
I am new with the FAC and had the big .22lr Vs .17HMR debate. I bought both and glad I did. The .22 gets used more with a lamp and the .17HMR during the day - both great and get used differently really

I've seen BRNO 452's they look identical. Are they like Skoda and VW in the car world? But with the same underpinnings?

They are basically identical. I bought a CZ 452 for about £600 with scope and mod. I also bought a Brno with a scope and mod for £150 and it's frighteningly accurate. I've owned both and I'd say go Bruno. Use the saved pennies for decent optics.

truckboy1
I have both the 22lr and 17hmr I do like the 22lr for the rabbits and its quite and clean with out doing too much damage to the rabbits, however the 17 is very useful for longer range rabbiting but try to head shoot them because they do make a mess if you blow the guts out also ruins the meet if your looking to eat your bunny's the 17 is also very good for the crafty corvids that always seem to sit just out of range of the shotty but not the 17hmr. I also use the hmr to nail the cubs in the spring

Billy.
have you got a link for that please as i am in the same boat as the OP £125 £195 - this is exactly the same as mine Guntrader is the place to look. Dekers
.22lr and HMR are different, one is not better than the other, they both have their uses and some land/use may favour one more than another. If you have several pieces of land to shoot on then you will almost certainly find them BOTH worth having in the Cabinet!
gjuk1985
£125 £195 - this is exactly the same as mine Guntrader is the place to look. UK gunroom is a bit short of brnos It might sound silly but I'm almost put off by the cheap price of this. I realise its more difficult to change your FAC gun, having only one slot. So I do want to get it right 1st time around and keep it long term. It's almost soo cheap, where's the catch?
Billy.
It's almost soo cheap, where's the catch? Just behind the bolt. You can reach it with your thumb. If you don't like it, 1 for 1 it. Edited October 27, 2010 by Billy.

I recently bought a CZ 452 American in .22 and a CZ 452 .17HMR Varmint 16" both with SAK mods, both with Hawke scopes (3-9X50 on the .22 and 4-12X50 on the HMR) with mounts and some ammo thrown in for less than a grand. All brand new. I was happy with that.

As far as scopes go, I don't think you need to spend S&B, Swaro money on a scope for either but hey it's your dollar.
