Wich .17 HMR should I go for ?

I have a cz452 america with a Hawke nite eye 4-16x50. This is quite a cheap set up but I have found no problems with it. Its very light and small ideal for shooting from a vehicle.

My mate has a ruger with laminate stock and a simmons whitetail 3-9x40. He much prefers the my CZ setup as his rifle keeps losing the zero. We cant figure out why. He doesnt bash it about. Im not a great shot but can manage inch groups at 100 yards off a harris bi pod with either of the two rifles as long as its dead calm.

I think you will find a lot of history on this topic if you do a search.

If you are looking for a sensibly priced tool for vermin control that works then you will struggle to beat a CZ, all the variants in all the models, 452/453/455 (what happened to the 454..did I miss it?)

The older BRNO (Same gun basically, earlier model) are also more than worth considering! :hmm:

If you are determined to splash the cash then possibly Sako or Anschutz, but don't expect better results in the field!

CZ if cost comes into it, if not Anschutz (better buld quality) but to fair both shoot the same groups at 100yards, CZ is good just do a trigger job on it :hmm: and save yourself a couple of hundred to put towards a scope.

As for what scope, get the best you can afford unless you state a budget you have.

I have around £1200 for the whole setup Gun, Scope, Mod, ect

£500 for a CZ (and plenty of Change)

£100-£200 for a scope, (I fail to see the need for £1500 of Nightforce on a HMR)

£35 for a SAK

£30-£40 cleaning kit!

Get the dealer to throw in a slip, sling and box of ammo!

Consider a bipod at a later date £100 ish, and Lamping kit £110 ish!

I'd say you have enough left for a serious p***up at Christmas!

Yeah, what he said. My HMR setup was as follows;

CZ American (16" barrel because it's easier to use in/from a vehicle) - £350

Leupold VX-1 3-9x40 scope (no point spending a fortune but these are a good cheap end of mid range scope) - £230ish

Don't skimp on the mounts either. Allow £40 for a decent set.

Sak mod - £30

Harris bipod - £85

Brookes trigger kit - £15

Cleaning kit - £40

So what does that come to? £750ish? Maybe stick on £100 for a lamp kit if you need one and spend the change on other toys.

I could shoot very well with my CZ, easily as well as my mate with his Quad. I wouldn't spend any more on a rifle that you want to use in the field. CZs are bomb proof and accurate, and if you drop them in the mud you'll be a lot less likely to cry than you would if you had an Anschutz! Remember too that all rimfires accuracy is limited to the quality of mass produced ammo. The CZ is as good as any.

i would agree with the above - definitley go with the shorter barrel version - youve seen mine mate - its very easy to shoot from a vehicle! i found the ase utra slim and (IMHO) had a slight edge over the sak (used that on the .22), in terms of scope i wouldnt break the bank - got a nighteater 8-32 x 60 - the mag is a bit of an overkill - but its good in low light. definitley get a bipod - i use the 13-27" harris - good for sitting shots as well, ive managed to plough my way through a large number of bunnys with it - good luck with the application :hmm:

im in the same position ive got a slot for 17 hmr,but ive herd that the 17 MACH2 is better and the ammo is half the price. i dont no a lot about this ..

:hmm: Most ammo makers have dropped HM2 from production. Being a rimfire that's not too handy as you can't even load for it if it disappears. Go HMR, the HM2 is neither subsonic or good at long range. It's a pointless mid way between HMR and .22lr IMO.

There is probably no such thing as the best set up. Everyone has a take on what is "best for them"

The lads above have some excellent advice...... I recently bought a .17hmr and got a silhouette 16 inch regular weight because I like the shape of the stock in plastic (Montecarlo) because it is a working tool for many many nights out and although I love wood this is more practical for me on a bunny basher.

I put on a SAK and bought an extra mag from this site.

I've a Simmons 3 to 9 X 50 scope which is good for days and under the lamp at night - there are better scopes out there but it does the job for me at .17HMR ranges.

A £15 quid trigger kit is not always necessary. CZ triggers often needed them before but the factor seems to have been listening to PW members! and been shaping up with better stock trigger ..... try it first and if you don't like it then spend the extra £15. My stock CZ trigger is sweet and no need to change it at all.

I have found this set up a joy to use ............... and I do have an Anschutz gun to know the difference (but a .22Lr version)

For cleaning - £16.50 for a bore snake and a bottle of gun cleaner should be all that it needs with a couple of pull throughs after 20 ish shots. I've not needed more than this yet and some long time hmr owners only do this.

Hope this helps

Malk

point taken, that makes sense it was just the thought of the cheaper ammo but ive dismissed the idea now...

If cost vs performance is a consideration for you then get a Hornet and home load it! Trajectory is almost identical but you get 600ft-lbs for the price of 250! :good:

.22 Hornet. It's a small centrefire round that can be home loaded for about the cost of HMR ammo. It's pretty mild unlike the .223 etc and is just another option if you want HMR type ranges but with the added bonus that it will take down a Fox at the same range a HMR will do a bunny.

I swapped from a HMR a couple of years ago and never looked back. :good:

Can you buy factory loads or is it home loading only?

You can buy factory but it's not cheap. You're looking at £8/20 at best so then it's a total rip off for what you get! You have to home load for it to be worth having, but then that's not as hard as people make out with the right components.

EDIT... Before I drag this way off topic for the OP, if any of you want to discuss the Hornet you can PM me or start another topic and I'll chat on forever!

For the OP........

I've found that the .17hmr on rabbit is as much punch as you can sensibly want on such a small creature. I guess if you use a larger calibre and head shot only then ok but the .17 does a very effective job and at times too effective!

On the whole, the .22 Lr give you more meat and less damage if that is important to you.

I really like the extra range the .17hmr gives me over the .22lr
