kacy
GAME OR SPORTER, IS THERE MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE AS I`M LOOKING TO BUY MY FIRST GUN AND WANT IT TO BE AN ALL ROUNDER, LOOKING AT A BROWNING 525 WHICH CLAIMS TO BE A GAME GUN ANY GOOD?????? sitsinhedges
The main difference is the weight. Some clever soul on here summed it up well by saying a game gun is for shooting a little and walking a lot whereas a sporter is for shooting a lot and walking a little Game guns tend to have auto safety along with fixed chokes, shorter barrels and narrower ribs but if you want to do everything you will have to decide what you are going to compromise on. I can't stand heavy guns because I tend to walk long distances so lean towards light guns but generally choose autos myself because they absorb a lot of the recoil so I get the best of both worlds BTW, TURN YOUR CAPS LOCK OFF

vampire
Got a rizzini sporter and mate has the game rizzini,if you hold one in each hand you cant tell the difference in weight
BerettaSV10
If its a all rounder you are looking for, I would go for a sporter version. As well as the Browning 525 you could look at the Miruko's and the beretta 686 series. If on a budget the Lanber sporting delux is another good option. The most important thing on deciding which gun to get is the fit of them, if it does not fit correctly then you won't be happy with it. HDAV
Also some game guns are fixed choke and sporters Multichoke, The 525 is a great gun (i have one and so does a mate) but there are lots of model designations and variants so check the spec of the actual gun ideally 3" chambers, Steel proofed and Multichoke. P~MX
there's a guy selling a nice Beretta 682 sporter in the "Other sales" section, I don't know him But the gun looks tasty and at decent money too, I'd buy it only I've no spaces left and I don't want to part with any of my guns . A sporter will shoot any thing - I suppose a game gun will too But if you shoot clays with a game gun there will be a fair bit more kick as it will be a couple of pounds lighter as it's designed this way for carrying around over the fields etc. f3
BerettaSV10
May be taking things to the extreme in comparision, on a good days sporting I can get through 250 cartridges on a average day I will use a 100 cartridges. Using a sporter with 28G cartridges I can walk away as I started with out feeling the recoil thats on a beretta sv10 or a 525. Try the same cartridges in a Beretta ultra light (very light game gun, hence the extreme comparison) after firing a dozen cartrides you can feel the recoil and after a 100 crtridges you would end up with a sore shoulder. Plus being a game gun it has a auto safety and virtually every time I forgot to turn the safety off.
sitsinhedges
My Beretta 686 Special Sporting only weighs 7 1/4lbs which is a kind of an inbetweenie for an O/U but it still kicks more than my 6 1/2lb Urika Light 12 auto Edited December 10, 2010 by sitsinhedges
Dekers
My Beretta 686 Special Sporting only weighs 7 1/4lbs which is a kind of an inbetweenie for an O/U but it still kicks more than my 6 1/2lb Urika Light 12 auto I have a 686 Sporting Special and 391 Urika as well (not the light), it's an auto, I would be upset if it didn't kick less than the O/U. Dekers
GAME OR SPORTER, IS THERE MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE AS I`M LOOKING TO BUY MY FIRST GUN AND WANT IT TO BE AN ALL ROUNDER, LOOKING AT A BROWNING 525 WHICH CLAIMS TO BE A GAME GUN ANY GOOD?????? Lots of good advice already above, I like this one.... Some clever soul on here summed it up well by saying a game gun is for shooting a little and walking a lot whereas a sporter is for shooting a lot and walking a little but but but........ Bottom line is you will almost certainly be able to do whatever you want with either. Consider also a Semi (unless you have a specific desire to hit the Pheasant Shoots) I spent time on the Clays and almost always use my 391 Game gun (single barrel lightish semi), doesn't have a problem!
