Reloading

Recommended Posts

Gents,

I am thinking about starting to reload my own cartidges , I have been looking at the lee loadall 2 and the misses has said she will get it for me for Christmas.

Is there anywhere I can find out what Primers, wads and powder are ideal to use,I am looking to make 6 32's and no7 30's/32's

Also a good supplier of the equipmentI will need.

Regards

Its always a good idea to get a reloading manual and maybe get someone to show you the ropes to get started. There's quite abit of reloading data on the web as for reloading materials you will not be able to get primers via the post without paying quite a bit for delivery. Norman Clarks do most of the other stuff, so does Henry Krank ( both can be found online ).There is a very experienced and extremely helpful fellow on this forum that maybe able to assist and thats Floating Chamber if hes listening.

Lee Loadall II works well. If possible stick to one brand of case type / length to start with.

Lyman shotshell reloading 5 is a good allround reference, but is mainly American market components.

Peter Lawman is in Northants ? for wads, powder primer

You receipe will probably depend on what's available and someone local in the know will be a great help.

You want Peter Lawman at Northampton but you need to know exactly what you require. He sells the stuff and is a great bloke to deal with but isn't a shotshell reloading expert.

If you are OK with plastic wads I would recommend CX2000 primers, Vagner VP13 wads and Vectan A1 powder. I have just made a batch using these components and they are looking good. They are relatively mild to shoot and I have had some good kills with them.

The Load-all is sold by Lawman but is a marmite loader, some think it value for money others wouldn't have one for free. I've never tried one so can't comment.

EDIT: You will also need a reliable scale, most important tool of all

hi willow regarding the lee load all there not a bad bit of kit but that can be fussy about the shells that thay will crimp and need a little time getting to grips with it a tip is the star crimp starter needs lining up with the exsisting crimp or it makes a little messey crimp and you need 70mm/75mm case as it not do smaller but for the money there spoton as a start point. and when or if you want you can keep a eye out on the sales for somthing a little better if you enjoy reloading

The LeeLoadAll bushes can be made adjustable by drilling and using a brass set-pin.

ALWAYS line up an inward facing crimp-fold before you crimp-start!

The Lee makes good crimps and will CUT good crimp folds in NEW cases.

Finish off with a quick spin with a bobbin for a good finish.

One thing you have to ask yourself buddy is is it worth it the time, expense, hassle i reload carts for wildfowl but thats only because the ones that are available are not all that i would never reload game, pigeon, clay carts its certainly not cheaper so what are you gaining by doing it many people have wasted a lot of money only to sell it 12 months later.

That may be true but it's also cheaper to not buy a gun and just get your pigeons from the butchers

It's just another part of the hobby and I can also load stuff that's impossible to buy at any price.

thats a ace tip fc thanks ,and andy spot on about another part of the hobby on a wet cold night when you cant be ***** to get wet and cold set my loading station up and get to work or get heater going in workshop and make some shot. got the pressers set up on a cheep roller cabinet from lidl works first class and both th lee load all and the mec (thanks andy it works briliant) bolted to it.

fc have you shortend the finishing crimp tube on the photo and does it still work well on longer carts? if so i might do that mod aswell.

good luck with your project, i`d recomend using european powders from noblesport / vectan. the american stuff is way too expensive.

get a ballance to work out your powder drops.

I have had 2 of this specific type of scale and they have been excellent, cheap accurate and reliable :good:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/UK-0-01g-x-200g-MINI-DIGITAL-POCKET-OZ-WEIGHING-SCALES-/200512561198?pt=UK_BOI_Electrical_Test_Measurement_Equipment_ET&hash=item2eaf7ae02e

Another tip is to convert powder from grains to grams to save having to keep swapping back when weighing shot :good:

You can spend loads on a set of "reloading scales" or you can go on ebay, search for digital scales as used by jewellers etc and pay about £10 including delivery for a set. Make sure they do grains, ounces and grams and have a 'tare' option so you can zero it with a powder measure and then check the net weight. I bought a set from the states for $5 and they are brilliant, even come with calibration weights. Enjoy your reloading, its a great way of wasting your time when the weather sucks, and very satisfying when you get a bang instead of a "phut" and only costs twice as much as the ones you can buy!

Really? I must have been wasting a lot of money these last 48 years!

Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy reloading 12g and .410, but for 12g but I don't believe I'm saving money. If someone can show me how reload a 12g cartridge cheaper than the £140.00 per thousand that I paid for the last load of 1oz 12g cartridges I will be well impressed. As an example current prices from Henry Krank; Lead £36 to £46 for 7kg, which at 28grams will fill 250 cartridges at 14.5p each, I use Green Dot at £32 a pound so 24 grains will fill 290 carts at 11p each. Primers are 4p each and wads are 5p. So, I can buy at 12g cartridge for 14p, shoot it, and then reload it for 34p. The numbers have to be better for .410 which cost more but only use half the powder and shot. If I worked that out I'd probably stop doing it. Here's another thought, Midway's 'cheap' lead is £100 for 25lbs, which works out to 25p per cartridge. Cheaper to buy cartridges, cut 'em open and get your reloading lead that way me thinks. I might save money with a shot making machine, as there's a bloke in the pub selling roofing lead for a good price, said he was worried the weight of it might bring the old church roof down so he took it off for them for free.

The answer is Vectan powders and primers from Peter Lawman, cheap plastic wads and a shotmaker.

It's still a labour of love but far cheaper than your estimate and a shotmaker could even help fund the other components.
