Personally, a train wouldn't be a risk I'd take. Last thing you'd want is to get mugged on a train and believe me, you'll stick out like a sore thumb with your shotgun on your lap

If they can refuse dogs, I'm sure they can refuse guns

Vince Green
ah best i do then mate, as was going to take me cocker aswell, cheers matt I always suggest its better not to have a conventional gun slip. A proper case is less obvious and a guitar case with guitar shaped hardboard cutouts to give it shape is best of all for a shotgun. Or just broken up in a holdall. yankeedoodlepigeon
Take a big ruck sack with it taken down like vince said. No one knows whats in it then.
Fatcatsplat
Have used public transport with a shotgun and ammo loads of times - A nice material (rather than rigid) takedown case preferably without a logo, is a worthwhile investment. If you ain't got that, break the gun down, roll it in a towel to protect it and stuff it in a sports bag. Just be discreet and keep it with you at all times - No sticking it on the luggage rack while you have forty winks!!
Bleeh
I used to carry shotguns all the time on public transport. I'd either keep it broken in a large sports bag, or a rucksack for the stock, and keep the barrels in a fishing pole cover.

OR use one of these http://www.avalon-guns.com/avalon/info_62961.html even allows you to take a chain and chain it to the luggage rack or a chair (would it be better chained up in a luggage van only accessed by the Guard? do they still have them?) Carts are too heavy to lump about in any volume more than 100? especially if you have all the rest of your kit and clothes to carry. Or wrapped in towels (broken down) in a large hard sided suitcase no one would know it was there except you and use a trigger lock for good measure. guest1957
Page 27 of this is fairly blunt about the train companies' rules: http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/system/galleries/download/misc/NRCOC.pdf
