timb
Just a "what if" question.... ... I have cut open and emptied a 12b cartridge to show my son what's inside, I assume I could fire the primer only to get a small bang if I wanted to ? Is there enough energy in the primer only to do any damage, or even to propel wadding from the gun ? No intention of trying, just wondered. swiss.tony
nothing much just a little bang like a cap gun bit boring really :( and you av wasted 25p shame on you lol
steve_b_wales
Yes. It appears that you have only removed the lead shot? Firing the 'empty' catrridge (with powder still inside) will eject the wadding some distance, and would produce a loud bang. Take the wadding and powder out, and you can fire the cartridge without causing any damage or danger.
sitsinhedges
I had a factory cartridge that was apparently missing its powder. Fired it at a clay ground and it had enough inertia to send out the shot, you could see it in one big lump, but it left the wad in the barrel. Very dangerous if you're not aware of it. Imperfection
Last week i reprimed a 357 magnum case then discovered it was split so i just popped it into my rifle and fired it-didnt even disturb my dog! Provided theres nothing inside the case which could act as a projectile you'll be fine.
Redgum
I had a large rifle primer that wouldnt go into the primer pocket so I put some safety goggles on and hit it with a hammer,.............. it was loud. Shot a 12gauge cartridge with my rimfire to see what would happen, hit the primer and that only went phut. yankeedoodlepigeon
Shotgun cartridge will give off a load bang when fired without powder in shotgun and leave a dirty residue in barrels. i cleaned by firing a propper one through it thats the case with D&J anyhoo
fortune82
When I was a kid we set up some shotgun cartridges on a fence post and shot at them with our air rifles. My mate hit the primer on one and it came back at him like a rocket! We stopped after that. Edited January 11, 2011 by fortune82
The Duncan
hahahhaha! Good one!, we've all done daft things as kids A mate and I were using felled pines as a backstop with our air rifles. Mike fired and the pellet flattened against the super-hard pine core and rebounded, but like a tiny super-fast lead frisbee and neatly slices 1/2 inch line under his left eye! Lucky or what? An inch higher and he'd have had a trip to the eye hospital
Daveo26
There is not enough back pressure produced to burn the powder properly if you remove the shot from a cart so you end up with unburnt powder down the barrel.
Darcshadow
hey; i have tried this a few times, if you just take the primer and brass off then it will give quite a big bang all things considered, they make very expensive air gun targets hence why i don't use them haha and if you leave the powder in but no shot it will blow the powder out and only burn a small percentage. i think holding the brass with the primer in and it going off would cause quite a bit of damage to your hand, nothing too serious but it doesnt half go with a bang
