Another nice walk around

Today i had a walk around with stu of the forum to see if we could bag a few parts or a pheasant .

Fist we went to a stubble field which normally holds a few pheasant first thing but not today saw them but not where we could get to them . Walked the field and pushed 8 english way in front tho .

On to the next a small field where the partridges have been giving us the run around this season and today they were not there great

On to the next a few sugar beet fields walked them and pushed 2 good coveys of around 15 english and a few french but no shots taken .

Back to another wheat stubble and pushed 12 english which landed some 150 yards in front carried on and lifted another 12 english which stu knocked 1 out of and i was sure i had hit 1 , walked on and put up the birds which landed ahead but again to far infront .

Got in the truck and was heading to the other stubbles when stu spotted the english i had hit dead on the track it could not of dropped in a better place

On to the last stubble and i sent stu to the top as a stander and i walked the field ,i sone put up 15 plus english which went out the side with the back 1 being dropped this lifted anoth 6 english but they were away in the ever growing stronger wind .

I carried on and put up 2 french which i missed  then i was about 100yards from stu when 9 english rose and hit the wind and flew straight for stu ,they spotted him and gained hieght and gave stu a very sporting shot and with his 1st shot he pulled 1 down but there was not much chance of another as they were really shiffting in the wind

So all in all a nice morning which showed well over 50 english again in a small area :good:

Final bag 4 english

Nice little walk around Tom, we used to be able to do similiar twenty years ago but don't have the numbers of coveys now, I take it these are wild birds ?

What greys we do have though are in nice big coveys, all double figures up into the teens, hopefully if we have a dry summer they will have another good breeding season.

Those two brace of wild partridge are worth two dozen reared pheasansts in my eyes, its true when they say you do not appreciate what you have until its gone, we used to shoot a couple of dozen or so when rough shooting over a winter, now I rarely raise a gun to one. We used to remark on a redleg in the bag, oh how times have changed, I'm talking like I'm ancient but I'm just 40, alot has changed in the shooting world in the last 20 years!

Looks like you have a good head of birds your way, look after them they might not be there for ever.

Its a lovely bird and its a shame you dont see them around your area as much now . Our area has been helped with estates putting them down each year and trying not to shoot them ,but this has now stopped . Good pest control and sugar beet fields help and plenty of wide field margens too . would be gutted if the same happened hear so hope they keep breeding well as i love to see them fly :good:
