Stealth geese

Spent a nice two days with Nick & my mate Jim, starting with a 1/2 day at the woodpigeon. However they weren`t too co-operative as they weren`t keen on coming into the decoys, so we spent time in the wood, rotating who and where we were and ended with 9 between 3 of us, not brills but not bad, but better than working :good:

Then we went to the Tay and hope of a duck or two........ not when someone had parked a landie and boat trailer in the spot I had in mind  So we moved further upstream as we would be pushing it for time if we went to another area.

I was with Nick and we were there for a short while and the tide was starting to back off and there was a lot of flotsam coming down from the recent floods, when I saw what I thought was a decoy, or at least a pice of wood that looked like a duck, floating down on the tide. I said to Nick that I would see if Jimmy would shoot it and I hissed at him "There`s a duck !" and at that both me and Nick saw it seem to change direction across the flow

Turns out it was a Tuftie and we saw lots of them float past us as the tide dropped further, we also saw Teal, and I stress, SAW ! They flitted out of the dark and past us with hardly a gun raised let alone fired.

Jimmy was working this morning and I picked Nick up at silly O`clock and we headed out to the fields we saw a lot of Greys in the previous day.

It was hard getting the stakes into the ground at times and there was a nice wind to move them slightly. I had to set a semi horseshoe as there was a burn for us to hide in and some power cables at an angle through the field, I prefer either small(ish) clumps, like family groups and tried to set a few to either side like they had landed and were walking to the main group.

First goose was a single and wouldn`t even look at us and the next few groups went to a field about 2-300 yds away :/

However we soon had a nice group come in and as they back pedalled their wings, I yelled to Nick "Go !" and I aimed through a goose backing away, hoping Nick would get a shot at the group landing in the decoys. I connected but Nick was in an awkward position and fluffed the shot.

A group came in from our left and Nick neatly dropped the first bird and then we both emptied our barrels at a departing goose, which wheeled around with a load of others and dropped back into the other field !

The birds then continued to either skirt us or drop into the real geese, however late on we had a group come in nicely and Nick was on the ball and dropped a screamer and I shot a pair of holes in fresh air !

With 3 in the bag and as it was a couple of hours after sunrise, we called it a day. Nick may put up a pic of the bag later, here`s one of the decoy set.

May have a few beverages this evening :drinks:

I would just like to say a very large and heartfelt public thank you to Henry D, his generosity matches his warmth of character. You couldn't hope to hang out with a nicer guy.

H, Nick

Are those full body decoys you were using ?

How many do you put out when decoying a field

Cheers Ian

No not full bodied, but shells and there are a mix 28 sportplast with 4 head up and the rest feeding and a further 7 that are removable head shells. Like I say, I don`t tend to set them out in horseshoe shapes, just in a group or groups, just like the real birds.

I use 35+ everytime I go out and I recently bought a dozen+ sillosocks, but we`ve never had the wind to try them out......yet :yp:

Looks like a lovely spot lads - well done.

Nick, your large field just off the roundabout (A5) was Blue with Woodies yesterday, you missed some good sport there I suspect, although I know where I'd rather have been given the choice - good piccies too!

Cheers

Mike

Nice darts and nice photos.

Incidentally, the particularly "panoramic" photos ("the view from the woods") - was that a special setting, lense or a particular camera?

Sony phones have it as well :good:

Top work kids. :good:
