Blackbart
You've hit the nail on the head as to why I made this comment: "The shoot owner's face looked like a smacked **** when she found out how well we'd done." I've been beating on this shoot for six seasons and we haven't failed to show the guns enough birds to shoot plenty more than the bag even on the last shoot days of the season, you can't do that if you skimp on the birds you put down before the new season. If the team of guns don't achieve it, that's because they don't shoot well enough. There's three shot counters on the go and the shoot owner works on a 5:1 ratio. When our shooting days have been changed in the past to accommodate a client we've lost quite a few beaters and picker's up as there's so many other commercial shoots in the area where they work too, and they can't be in two places at once. Adding in extra days could be a recipe for disaster as we'd definitely be shorthanded and would struggle, a lot of the clients are repeat bookings and a bad day, in the name of increased profit, could actually cost the shoot owner dear in the longer run. If you are shooting 400 birds on a beaters day then they could put an extra day on and pay the beaters £100 each and still make a wedge !And beaters day consisting a 100 bird day.You wouldnt loose any beaters and everyone wins. How many birds does this shoot put down ?working on a very respectable end of season 5/1 ratio that means you have had 2300 birds put over the guns on a beaters day :o
Dekers
Just back, and a rather disappointing 259, mainly Pheasant with about 20 partridge, and a few of the other usual suspects! NO hen birds allowed though!

GW80
Tomorrow is beaters day on the estate i beat on and we are expecting a 100 bird return or if things go well 120, but for me it's not the bag but the craic we will have after the shoot!! Stocked up on 20g cartridges in 30g but not for tomorrow but the roost shoots next month.
PhilR
We had our beater's day today and it surpassed last years record of 461:good: There were twelve guns and we put 465 pheasants, 3 woodcock and 6 pigeons in the bag for a total of 474 all for 1359 shots, a shot ratio of 2.86:1. Our sixth and final drive was absolutely stunning we shot 253 pheasants for 695 shots and a ratio of 2.75:1. Several unprepared guns ran out of cartridges towards the end The other shoot on the estate has their beater's day tomorrow and then its beater's supper in the manor house afterwards. The gauntlet has been thrown down and I wonder whether our bag is beatable A brilliant day of shooting after four months hard work and a chance to shoot birds for nowt that'd cost £40 each :o if a day was bought there. Roll on next season
