I remember way back before skate boards,we used to put a book on top of a roller skate and race down the hilly roads :good: the number of clips on the lug I got for comming home with the heels worn off my shoes.

I once made a bow using a plumbers rod with the brass ens sawn off,and an arrow from an old cane fishing rod  my mam made me cut it up,far too dangerous

Talking of bangers can anyone remember the threepenny Wilders Thunderflash's - now those were bangers - put one in a milk bottle and float it down canal - like a depthcharge.

We (brothers) used to make bombs out of weed killer and sugar - pack it into one of those aluminium pill containers you used to get - pack a short length of drinking straw with the mixture as a fuse - stick it in lid then wrap it all in insulation tape - by heck the went bang - To be honest we were very lucky looking back on it.

STOP! Don't get this locked as well ! :good:

The 'posh kids' who went to Grammer School were the worst, my mate made explosives, tried to dry the mix and blew his bedroom radiator off the wall :lol:

His chemistry teacher showed them how to make them balls that bang when you throw them on the floor, matey helped himself to the ingredients....

Makes my pea gun look very juvenile

The aluminium running relay batons we borrowed and filled with home made explosive, as above, used to make quite a good bang on our playing fields, do they have them any more - playing fields I mean. Jetex fuses spring to mind with big bangs too, perhaps that's how we got the batons to explode.

We nicked some phosphorus from the chemistry lab, it was keep in liquid (paraffin?) if I recall correctly to stop it igniting when it came in contact with air, I can't remember what we did with it but it earned us a few stripes across both hands with the cane.

Where we lived when I was 12 was relatively flat, so my younger brother and I made a wind-powered cart, using a broom-stick mast and one of Mum's best sheets.

It went at a fair old lick, but the pram-wheels were too narrow to give it stability, so after a few grazed knees, and an inexplicably ripped and dirty sheet, we went on to safer pursuits, like air-guns.

I remember my elder brother nicking a few blank starting pistol cartridges from the school sports-day, and the terrifying effect of hitting one with a hammer.

- we only did it the once

Were they the little pink/red cardboard tubes that were sealed at one end with some kind of paste and that had a small domed "fuze" at the other?

If so, yes, they were ferocious!

EDIT: I tried to be helpful and have a look for myself to see if they are the same. Note to self, putting "Bangers" into google images returns more than you may have bargained for :o :o :o

also lot more links here

Did bring back some old memories - I like the instructions - place on ground -light and retire - "Do not hold" --too right there was nothing left of them unlike in future years when all that happened was fuse blew out.

A few things on here reminds me of what me and my mates used to get up to when we were kids. Wars with BB guns in the street, no safety glasses, just turn your head if you see someone shooting at you! Hitting as many paper caps with a hammer as you dared, home made bows etc.

I got a chemistry set when I was about 8 (still got it somewhere) and the sort of things in it wouldn't be allowed these days, meths burner, cobalt salts (very toxic!) etc the best you get in them these days is a bit of baking powder.

You couldn't buy bangers in this country when I was a kid (I'm 26) so it was always really exciting when a friend went on holiday to France and came back with a box of them, stuffing them into a plastic bottle and then (quickly!) screwing then cap on before throwing it always gave the best results :D

As we got older things got more interesting, like making smoke bombs with sugar and the other ingredient (you all know what it is but I'm not going to post it here just incase it gets the thread pulled!) in a coke can was always good for a laugh, tried making bottle rockets with it as well but never managed to get the balance right so they always toppled forwards and propelled themselved down the garden instead of going up! Or making coil guns from the capacitors and charging circuits of disposable cameras (used to get bin bags full of used one for free from the photo development place!), got it working well enough to launch a 1/8" X 1 1/2" nail straight through a coke can. I only electricuted myself once.... accidentally short circuiting a 330 V 160 uF capacitor onto your hand hurts, after that I learnt to repect electricity!
