177 Pellet Distance & Scope distance

Hi all,

I have 2 questions, I am new to Air guns so excuse me if these questions are basic.

1) I have a Daystate MK3. What is the effective distance of my .177 pellet. I dont not mean maximum distance, i mean the most effective kill range.

2) I have a Hawke Endurance scope 3.5 - 10 x 50 what is the best distance to zero the scope at for shooting pigeons and rabbits.

Cheers,

all my airguns are zeroed to 40yds and effective range max is 50yds, if you have the skill

practise on targets before you have a go at live quarry. have respect for the animals you hunt :good:

Yes i agree 100% i shoot game with my 12 bore but only after i spent a lot of time and money on lessons at the clay range. Plan to do the same with the air rifle.

With a .177 I would zero at 35 yards, this should mean that your pellet will hit within 1/2" of the centre of your crosshairs (ie. in the 'kill zone') from 10 to 40 yards without you having to adjust elevation too much. After 40 yards the pellet drop becomes more and more pronounced and compensating for the breeze becomes much less predictable. I would reduce the distance for a .22 to 28-30 yards.

I also agree with vampires comments.

Im with him and I can go a little further depending on wind condition.

I would suggest you start cose on targets and learn how to control your brath before you consider taking on live quarry.

Nice Rifle but not ideal for a beginner.

You should download a copy of Hawke ChairgunPro, which will plot pellet trajectories for you.

With it you can see pellet drops over all distances and you can determine over what distances your pellet is within, say, 0.5 inch kill zone.

It's free from http://www.chairgun.com/

Before gaining my fac i had the AA 410 .177 and forty yards is no problem for the rifle and further is easy within its ability as long as the owner has the skill and knows their own limits,it took me ages to learn the sweet spot, hold over and bracketing, once learned and knowing the range etc a .177 pcp is a fantastic paddock gun for rabbits.

You want to see how far it will shoot on targets (only),you may be surprised at the distance the pellet travels,i know i was as i ended up running out of scope to hold over at 80 yrds shooting at a football size clod.

I must stress that the furthest i ever shot a rabbit with the gun was well below that and would never attempt to kill live quarry at more than 40/50 yrds maximum for fear of wounding and lack of power for a clean kill.

well i have absoloutly no perception of distance and practice by judging things against other things at a known distance, All my air guns (see my sig) are set to the back stable wall from my house, my shoes are about as long as an A4 bit of paper and it takes about 83 one foot in front of the other to get there i can hit within about an inch diameter of my targets, sometimes putting pellet on pellet, but rarely. with the .177 i kill anything at that range, rats pigeons squirrels (garden vermin) but mostly give cans a bashing,

with the .22's i dont shoot pigeons as i have found it, ineffective ( i take breast shots - works with .177 and the more powerfull .22 ) but i often manage rabbits at this distane +/- a negligible distance.

i understand shooting springers is very different to pcp, as the one time i shot one it was as if someone had opened my eyes ha, cannot affod the kit though but have been tempted by my friends cheap attemps with a crosman 2100b as it is recoilless but fairly accurate, also the crosman 1077 i think ? or the umarex 850 but know little about them

1) the distance you can garantee a first shot hit on an extra strong mint with no rangefiding and no previous sigting shots, for a well practiced shot this normally means about 30-40yds but we are all different. I have yet to meet the guy who can garantee it much further and i have shot with a few good uns

2) 35 yds is the norm for 12ft lb .177 but it also depends on you scope to bore height etc. But use 35 yds for .177 as a generalisation and you will get as near to point and shoot as is possible with most setups in this calibre
