What would you class as the best? We are with the Kennel Club. Not cheap at all but when we have had to claim not a problem , all sorted by the vet. Could not have been easier or less stressful. With our cars we went Cheap, More Than, seemed like a good saving. What an inept, useless, totaly ******* ******** bunch of ******* they realy are!!!!!!!!!!!! Three weeks in from a bump and we still don't know if the car is a right off or going to be repaired, words fail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So what do you consider a good deal?

p.s. I used to be a calm kind of guy, honest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Double check that working dogs are covered, they premiums with everybody seem to be going up recently.

On a positive note NFU mutual were happy to insure Dads lurcher, and when he needed to claim the vet was very impressed with how it was dealt with. The claim was for disease rather than an injury, but they included the provision of specialised food.

READ ALL SMALL PRINT. Ask any questions you may have and get all replies in writing, tape record any conversations, photocopy anything you may think may be used against you at an unforeseen future event. Then, only then will you be in with a chance of getting a payout..................Bitter? no not me!!

Joking aside I have seen the true side to insurence companies over the last week or two, make sure they offer what you need WHEN you need it.

If you get a regular pet cover is it valid for working dogs? I hear tesco are offering half price on pet insurance but not sure if it would cover working dogs

In answer to your question... No unfortunately

>>> from there web site : Used for monetary gain or in connection with any trade or business, commercial purposes, breeding or gun-dog use

Some companies insure gundogs, some unconditionally and others with conditions. I was with More Than who have no conditions attached whereas another company I went with said that they'd insure for gundog use as long as they only worked less than 2 shoots per year! They thought that 10-12 shooting outings a year with a dog was excessive!

I've just gone with 'Animal Friends' insurance who offer a good level of cover for a reasonable price. When it comes to next season, I shall probably simply buy a policy from the Countryside Alliance for a fiver a month to keep my dogs fully covered in the field. - Although....providing its not a gunshot wound, who's to say whether the injury occurred on a shoot, or just a nice country walk???

as said mention working them and it rings alarm bells with most, however as said most injuries in the field could be picked up on a walk and it isn't your vets job to try and invalidate your cover.

True enough, except being shot.

I have mine insured with Petplan on a lifetime policy. I am not really interested in the cheapest, I want the best cover for my dogs.

My bill from when Merlin was shot was just over a grand, I paid the £90 excess and Petplan did the rest with no fuss.

I would have been looking for the shoot's insurance or the gun's insurance to pay that.

I agree with al4x, any injuries occur on a walk.

you would think so MC but and this comes from being a vets son dogs do get shot that aren't out shooting, probably less so now but when I took the calls I remember a few that had gone off hunting on their own and keepers had obviously taken pot shots at them.

In your case personally I wouldn't have been claiming on my own insurance and it would have been done against the guns insurance of him personally. I'm with petplan and as you say they do decent cover but you do pay through the nose for it

I contacted VIP and they have quoted lifetime cover for my 3 dogs at £18 each per month.

Vets fees to £10,000 and 3rd part insurance £1Million excess is £80

Do you think this is good, obviously im looking at £54 a month here and i dont really know which way to go at present

Yep a bit concern over costs but today i had some more info from VIP

Premium £5.75 per month, excess charge £50 its basic accident cover up to £1000 per claim and there is no limits on how many claims per year, but its accident and not illness, so if the dog cuts itself or breaks a leg then its covered, but if it gets liver disease for example then you have no cover....but for £17 per month i can have accident cover for my 3 dogs....dont think thats to bad and better then nothing
