9mm or no 3 bore garden gun

My first gun was a number 3 bore or 9mm vermin or garden gun, the original eley shot cartridges had a brass base and pale green cardboard body. The paper or cardboard was supposed to fire through the barrel leaving only the brass or was it copper base to eject. Then along came Fiocchi with their chrome plated all metal cartridges a vast improvement as I am sure smouldering paper discharged from a gun barrel was a good recipe for burning down barns. The gun , it was an "Acme" was a family thing and it had fallen into my teenage hands when only shot cartridges were available. However there had at one time been bullets, described to me by the local gubnshop as, "breech cap bullets" whatever they were. I do recall Gough Thomas writing of these decades ago as being only powered by the precussion cap, but perfoprmance could be improved by separating the ball or bullet from the case and adding a few grains of powder. Has anyone on the forum came across any of these 9mm solid ball cartridges?

I can buy them 9mm Fiocchi shots form my local RFD.

I dont see them as beeing that good though as i was out shooting bottles with it yesterday, I was about 15 yards away and it hardly harming the bottle.

i've just reloaded some 9mm cartridges with sg out of a 12g cartridge, you can get 5 of them in and it turns them into a very good rabbit cartridge.

That's acctually a very good idea, must be quite expensive to do though.

How do you do it???

Can you use the used shells then???

I think the tern "reloading" may be a bit missleading,simon123,as far as i,m aware the only reason for removing the over shot wad is to change the shot size-most 9mm shells are loaded with dust shot as they were originally designed for shooting small birs/mammels without too much damage to the animal or its surroundings.I used to reload mine with no.6 shot for ratting at close range-armed with a semi-auto Benneli, maglite strapped underneath and a laser sight on top we used to have major fun-not cheap though!!

i agree that i used the wrong terminology,it does tend to be a little expensive but i had a lot of 12g cartridges laying about so i gave it a try.the standard 9mm are only good for about 15 yards when ratting but with the larger shot all is good out to 25 yards.they are also good for close range(20 yards)rabbiting out of the car window..

if you take a 410 cart pull the paper over shot card out but leave the rolled turnover crimp in place pour out the shot and push 3 sg shot in they fit fine! and the grouping was pretty darn good too

BUT i dont know if its safe to do so ive done it a few times on paper targets but thats me and if you damage your gun/yourself its on your own head
