Foxing with a 6.5x55 :-)

The fox was quite clearly standing facing us in the lamp light when Dan took the shot!

Both eyes could clearly be seen!

The foxes postion was reconfirmed when we got to it by the wound channel.

Next time we go out foxing we'll be sure to take better notes so that when we get the third degree we can report back with a totally accurate account of the night events!

This would stop all the second guessing by third parties who weren't there.

Stuartp,

Who told you about the other stuff ;):)

Hummer, that was good shot on a smallish target with 6x scope, how much do hold over at that range, the one thing I will say about federal 140's is the drop pretty quickly (4.5" already at 200 yards if you use 100 yard zero)

I thought the same thing me self. Prehaps hummer has an explaination.

no explanation needed really. even though it was too dark to use the range finder it was obviously a long shot , but i have shot the 6.5 for over 15yrs and shot over 300 wild boar and scores of roos and the odd goat. the combo is spot on for 150yds and i held what i thought would be an inch or so above his eye.

the round hit himon his jaw hinge and caused devastating damage. there was a breeze from left to right about 5miles an hour. i would never take a shot on a live animal that i was not positive, would end its life.

i would not have attempted that shot with a 222 or hmr (too far) at night but felt confident with the 6.5. in answer to the ticket question, my certificate says "the cert holder may posses, purchase , or aquire expanding ammunition, in calibres authorised by this cert and use only in connection with the shooting of vermin or in connection with the management any estate, wildlife."

ps sussex lad went back this am with his rangefinder and measured it.

Why on earth did you try to head shoot it at that range? You even admit to the bullet not hitting where you thought it would? Why not the chest? Sounds to me like you could just as easily have removed it its jaw without killing and left it to starve to death.

A misplaced chest shot, bad as it is, will still stop it going too far and allow a second shot, if you blow its jaw off whats to stop it runnuing full pelt as far as it can?

Even though they rip chickens apart for fun, i still treat them with respect!

Regardless of what you say, that sounds like a frivoulous shot to me!

pedantry is obviously your thing fister, by the way ,a name that probably says a lot about you on the gay circuit.

yes i should have said "eyes" if id have aimed for the chest as you advocate, and been off, then surely i may equally have wounded it by taking a leg off .frivolous your post was, but the shot was not.

Come on Guy's, what started off as a Good post has turned into a slanging match.

It's unjust to have a go at someone else's shooting unless you were there to see it.

If Hummer thought the shot was good then that is HIS decision, and whatever the outcome it is the person who squeezes the TRIGGER who has to live with what happens the receiving end.

How many PIGEON's have you had a go at that were a bit out of RANGE and carry on flying away..

She was very fat and I had a serious case of brewers droop, there was no way i would have even touched the sides so i decided on an alternate approach

Next day(this was a long time ago at UNI) my friends all heard the tale and just ribbed me about it relentlessly and the name just stuck. "Did you really **** her"? just became "****er".

what a charming and amusing anecdote. i hope you show your quarry more respect than you obviously do to women.

The point is had Hummer only aquired the gun last month and was taking 250yd shots then I can see the reason for all the commotion ............But at FIFTEEN years experience I should think he knows it inside out .

Anyway if the case was he was a novice then a more reasonable and not demeaning and belittling tone would have more effect at getting your point across fister ........Typical UNI Student mentality

Oh at 225yds with a amber filter on a deben Max pro I could pick out the vitals of a rabbit when looking through my Schmidt 8 X 56  ............And no at a £1 a bullet I didnt pull the trigger

Who cares. Hummer has a gun that would stop most things.Good shot, well taken. big gun, no probs.

My mate uses a .270 for foxing and if the shot is a bit low or a bit high the chances of the fox going to far are pretty slim after being hit. Second shot on its way..

Just keep banging them off!!
