Cake444
I’ve begun reloading my own cartridges and one thing I’ve found hard to acquire is Felt Wadding. Would anybody advise against using cotton wool as wadding with two card stoppers either side within the cartridge for obvious reasons? So powder, then card, then wool , then card and then shot? Catweazle
Sounds like a recipe for disaster, who knows what the chamber pressure will rise to as the wool compresses to nothing and the two powder cards collide.
sitsinhedges
You sound like a man who is heading for serious trouble. You need to get a proven recipe for what you want to make and follow it precisely or you risk hurting yourself. Fruitloop on here has an excess of 12gauge 20mm fibre wads for sale at a very reasonable price if I recall correctly. Get some proper components and load them correctly and then let us know how you get on.
MK38
Have you looked at these sites ? http://www.metal2models.btinternet.co.uk/page1.pdf http://www.claygame.co.uk/ Both list fibre wads... gotta be safer than stuffing cotton wool in a cartridge.... Vince Green
Felt wads, just to be pedantic are not really suitable for cartridges, too soft, they are used more in muzzle loaders. Cartridges really need fibre wads.
Cake444
Appreciate the replies. I figured that this wouldn’t be a wise question, but better to ask people who know. Surprisingly the reason I ask is because I found a thread through Google searching the subject were a chap was using cotton wool as wadding but this was for a muzzle loader. I don’t think I will get into reloading just yet then. I don’t have the equipment, money or knowledge to make it a safe and regimented practice so it would just end up being unsafe. Shall stick to buying in bulk
Cake444
What other components and loads are you using. I bought 3kg of 6shot for £15. I was intending to buy a Lee All Loader for around £51 as that seems within my price range. I have a couple of hundred un-primed 34gram/5 hull cartridges left over from previous shoots. I bought 500 primers but as of yet I have no powder.

It's not difficult but you just have to be careful, esp when just starting out. If you decide to go ahead I'm sure everyone on here who can will give you some guidance but the main two rules are to follow a published recipe and buy a reliable scale to measure what drops you are getting from your reloader. Stick to that and you wont go far wrong

Maybe next month i will buy a tub of powder and the Lee All Loader, make some use of the spent cartridges I have and save myself a journey in the car. My main reason for reloading was to save petrol funnily enough. There is a post further up by MK38 about wadding. £15 for 500 wads seems fairly good. Thanks for the post! The main load I will be repacking is going to be 34 gram 6's. I think the Lee All Loader has a powder to shot chart allowing you to get the ratio correct? Do I have to clean the cartridges before reloading them?

Do I have to clean the cartridges before reloading them? The Lee data will be mainly for American powders I think whereas over here we generally use european ones. Vectan A1 would probably suit your requirements and is £34 a kg from Peter Lawman but you have carriage on that aswell if you cant pick it up. You would typically get around 600 or so of the cartridges you wish to reload from a kilo. Reloading isn't about saving money though, it's just another part of your hobby like growing your own spuds Edited March 14, 2011 by sitsinhedges

I have no idea about powders to be totally honest with you? What would you recommend? Can I achieve different velocities with certain powders etc? Thanks for all the advice
