Iv not long had my first 4x4, a real mans car

A Vitara

Problem is its started knocking or banging on the O/S/R unless the road is dead smooth and straight.

Iv had a look round underneath and i can see anything obvious I suspect its possibly a suspension bush.

Is there anything obvious to check

Sticko, Iv Pmed stubby, cheers for the heads up.

BaconBoy, Thats enough of that :o You have to be comfortable with your sexuality before you buy a car of this type, so in the case of all male vit owners its a sign of extreme hetrosexual masculinity :good:

Infact you gay for not having one. :o

masmiffy, a ball joint on the rear axle? do they have them? :hmm:

Right, I jacked up the offending side this aft and removed the wheel.

The wheel bearing appears fine, some slight endfloat was present as far as im aware they are none adjustable?

The shocker bushes felt fine no obvious movement, also the shocker itself is dry so i dont think its lost its oil.

The spring is in one piece and the bump stop is present and correct.

There is a control arm that connects the axle to the chassis some very minor play in the

metalastic bushes same on both sides.

Then there is an "A" frame with bushes on either side and a ball joint on the top of the diff which is attached to a cross member again all seems fine.

Seemingly Stubby's problem was a damaged prop shaft. I check the rear prop and the U/Js feel fine.

Someone mentioned half shafts, not sure how to check them :hmm: anyideas I though they were either ok or snapped?

THIS IS DOING MY NUT IN

Ill add, mine was checked over fully underneath by 3 or 4 mechanics, and they all missed the worn joint, the play in it must have been enough to produce the annoying "knock" but not so much that a visual inspection would spot it, hard to explain but it eventually sheared on one side of UJ only, they way I found mine was, turn the radio up louder till something falls off approach,

luckerly I was only a few hundred yards from home when it did eventually snap in half, but limped home by putting into 4 wheel drive and thus getting power to front wheels,

Right I think Iv ******* cracked it.

With the car on all four wheels today I wobbled the NSR wheel as though checking the wheel bearing but with out it jacked up......

And Heard the familar knocking sound :good:

I got my mate to shake it for me (that sounds gay  ) and I looked underneath

the diff "a" frame supporty thing bushes are knackered

I checked them with a pry bar the day before and they appeared fine.

But i could clearly see and feel a knocking when the axle was rocked.

Now all i have to do is mend it

Bits4vits

Are these better than oe stuff?

Will do :good:

It looks fairly accessable really, Iv soaked the bolts in penetration oil

The only problem i can forsee is if the crush tubes are seized to the bolts in which case ill have to cut through them with a hacksaw  not cool.

Hopefully this time tomorrow ill have a knock free motor ;)

Well the bushes were a bit of a pig to fit as there is not a great deal to bar them into place off.

But i got there in the end after 2hrs od swearing and using a sash clamp to get them in the right spot.

Trouble was they did'nt cure the annoying knock.

I did the timing belt today as the car is a '98 and it was still running the original belt  . Then i turned my attention to THE NOISE.....

I got my dad to drive round while i sat in the boot listening to various places.

Guess what?

Its the rear door bottom hinge.

I seemed fine with no lift or movement until the door was almost shut, then when I lift the door I can hear that familiar sound.

It looked fairly rusty so I soaked it in WD40 to make removing the pin easier (I intended to drill the pin holes out to 8MM and replace the pin with an M8 bolt)

And the bloody thing has stopped banging

I think it must have seized in one spot and perhaps that has worn the pin on that plane, so freeing it off has allowed the pin to spin on to a fresh part and stop the movement

I dont' know but I do know that WD40 is awesome.
