why so many haters against the 17 hmr ?

That read like an honest account to me, I don't see why it needs to be picked apart

I would add that it may well have been dead, just kicking, before the last shot(s) but there is nothing wrong with making sure

Thanks Dunkield, not quite sure why I would need to lie about a fox being shot, it wasn't silly ranges or amazing marksmanship! (as some claim! )

Regards,

The HMR works on the fox VERY well in the right circumstances.

If I went on a site when I knew I may be looking 200yards+ for a fox I would not even think about the HMR though!

Many have different mind sets and many have different abilities, and I cannot help but think many have no HMR and fox experience either.

Any statement along the lines of "HMR is not suitable for fox" is b*******.

There are many situations and circumstances where the HMR has been my tool of choice for the fox, and it has never let me down yet when it is used in the right way on fox!

I agree with Dekers. The hmr is an adequate round to use on fox in the right situation, i.e up to 100yards. A dedicated fox round it is not. Its about knowing its limitations and sticking to that. As has been said if i,m out rabbiting with the hummer and Charlie shows up at less than 100yds then i,m afraid he,s going to "kop it". Simple as that. As for "knocking" the hmr as a calibre it depends what you expect from it. Use the calibre for what it was intended for and that is small ground vermin and you have a great flat shooting vermin basher with more range and clout than a 22lr simple as. IMO its a great little round that does what it says on the tin but just don't try and compare it with any center fire calibre :good: .

yup same here, something was wrong if it took 5 shots at sub 100 yards.

having shot a fair few with mine 31 at the last count I've had 2 runners when using the 20 grain bullets but none with the 17 vmax, not lost any and the 2 that ran actually didn't go as far as one I gut shot with the .223. Put the shot in the right place at the right range and its fine, not a dedicated fox gun but mine comes out when shooting near buildings, livestock or roads. Places I couldn't shoot them if I had to use a centrefire, then you get the ones you see when lamping rabbits and usually the .243 will be used but if they are close I won't bother swapping guns. All said though most of my shots I guess are about the 50 yard range hence probably why it has worked so well, whats nice with it is that little bullet goes exactly where you want it to

I have formed the opinion over the years that a lot of hype surrounding the 17 comes from the fact a lot of people are granted them as their first 'proper' gun.

They may previously have shot air guns or shotguns and got an HMR on their first ticket, so they are naturally very excited about it's ability.

It's speed is referred to already in this thread, I know it is only a rimfire, but is 2500 ft/sec really that fast?

That hits the nail on the head :good: Although I would say 2500 fps is fast,(just not CF fast :yp:).

I love the HMR but have wee hates for it.

Love: The trajectory! It puts small vermin down very efficiently. It is pretty accurate!

Hate: The price of ammo! Also the quality control from the factory.

If it came down to either HMR or LR, the HMR wins every time. I take the .22 out if I'm sitting off a few warrens as it is quiet. However, you also get a loud thud when you hit the rabbits anyway!

Ideal scenario would be a finnfire in HMR but that is not likely to happen  If it was also possible to hand load for I bet the accuracy would be sweet!

The hmr is a cracking tool for foxes in the right hands. Those that have practised with it on targets then bunnies and know what they are capable of as a shooter.I have the utmost confidence in mine for fox, 1 runner in 50+ who was dispatched further down the line. (with the exception of the one i shot with 20gr)

Be aware of your capabilites and that of the rifle and its very versatile little gun
