Success on My New Shoot

Through working in a country sports shop I've managed to land a shoot at the local golf driving range which is having problems with rabbits digging up the turf. I took my first trip up last night with the HW100 and the lamp for a recce and managed to bag these three pesky wabbits.

There were plenty more there for the taking but the wind was blowing my scent right over them (only one access route) so they were very scittish and bolted the instant the lamp lit up their eyes. Never mind, I'll catch them another day.

It's hard work gaining new permissions so I'm over the moon I'm finally getting somewhere with it. The range owner has given me an open invitation to shoot whenever I like so I foresee a few more hours, possibly holed up in one of the bunkers, waiting to snipe old bug's for me.

Here is a picture of my spoils, all three were promised to one of my customers, the next ones I get are definitely going on my plate! Apols for the dark, grainy image, it was pitch black and I only had my camera phone to hand.

I see no holes in em.... what happened pal ? did they die of laughter when they heard the pellets flying wide

Always the joker  Check out bugs at the top, look closely at his eye  the other two were strategically placed as to not scare the kids that view the site... :)

The bottom one was a real 'bleeder' too, shot it right behind the eye and the red stuff got all over, that pic was actually taken in the boot of my car which is now covered in rabbit blood!

and correct me if I'm wrong on this, but to date YOU'RE the only one of us that has made a kill by frightening the quarry to death with the constant whizz and zipping of pellets skimming overhead!! LOL

Remember that squirrel down in your garden

Just for the record, all three of these rabbits were headshot.

is it just me but the closest rabbit looks like there was been a shot through its ear, is that how you managed to get it? it probably fainted! :ernyha:

Actually, if I tell the truth, no animals were injured during the creation of this photo, I'm a highly skilled animal trainer and these are my finest pupils... they lay down and play dead at the mere hint of a carrot stick...

nice going marc m

personaly i would have gutted the rabbits in the feild , meat would taste so much better. like i said nice going :ernyha:

As a rule I gut them in the field too but I was specifically asked not to gut these ones, hence leaving them whole; they weren't for human consumption, instead they were going to be used as bait for some mink traps.

No one should hunt or shoot anything unless they can deal with the truth of what they have done

You need to learn and understand these things before you can take their life into your crosshairs.

No intention of using NV?

Less likely to spook the rabbits than a lamp :D Mine is good for 30 to 40 yards fine for further if shooting bigger quarry out but the 4.6 mag lets it down for rabbit sized stuff at more than 40 yards :/ Just a thought :/

Lord Georie, I'm not too convinced with NV gear, I can't really justify the expense of Gen2 stuff and all the Gen1 I've looked through has been really poor quality, and in my opinion overpriced at that.

We sell all Deben's range in our shop and even with my staff discount, for the image quality, I'd rather stick with the lamp and maybe try a few different coloured filters...

...either that or start eating a load more carrots...

As for the distance the shots were taken at, I find it really difficult estimating range at night (need more practice) I would have sworn the first I took was at 30'ish yards but when paced to target is was just under 25. Second rabbit was a similar distance away but the third was by far and away the best shot, paced at 40 yards, I rested on one of the driving range marker boards and aimed high, inbetween the rabbits ears, it went down straight away. Definitely the most pleasing shot of the night.

I'm going again this Wednesday night so will hopefully have more pics and stories to tell. Taking Andy (Carcharadon) with me too, he usually scares the rabbits away though with all the huffing and puffing he does when kitted up in his gear. I keep telling him to come to the gym with me, but he says he prefers being the out of shape "rotund" look LOL :/ :/ :/

:D
