bicykillgaz Posted April 22, 2011 Report Share Posted April 22, 2011 hi guys, I've been offered a cheap .222 by the guy who's land i shoot, he's thinking of giving it up and said he'd sell me it cheap if i was intrested. I've been thinking about getting a centerfire for a while purely for close to medium range fox so sort of 50-150yrds. At the minute i just carry some 42g no3's but rarely get close enough to shoot and kill cleanly with a shotgun so this sounds ideal. The chap hasn't bought any in ages but thinks it worked out about 30p a round roughly, i was just wondering if this sounded about right? I know a lot of people would suggest i went for .22-250 or .223 and if i had more land and money i probably would but due to the rifle been cheap and it been purely for fox i think i'd be daft to spend big when this will do everything i'll need it too. You might be able to pick them up for less but I doubt you will get them for less than £15 for 20 but if the gun is cheap and shoots well it is a small price to pay. It works out approx 55p per round, and it's good enough for foxes etc. I have used this brand in my .22-250, .243 and .308 with excellent results. Steve. activeviii Posted April 22, 2011 Report Share Posted April 22, 2011 yep. privi's work well. i used them for a while until i got into reloading. if you want to buy v-max then its around £1 a clip, ppu are half that. if you do go for ppu then save then empty cases, im almost out.haha. Thats what my old man was paying for his .243 rounds a couple of years ago. I'm guessing its down to them not been that widely used anymore. Evil Elvis Posted April 23, 2011 Report Share Posted April 23, 2011 Eastern sporting do vamx remmingtons for .70p a pop, superb for fox, the privi partisans are a lot cheaper but dont do ballistic tips only solids which wazz straight thro and you may get runners...for 20 yards then they go down. i have taken foxes out to 280 yards during the day but tend to keep it sub 200 yards while lamping, a very versatile round and not much louder than the HMR Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I think my set up was £50 but i was lucky in hooking up with some one that knows what their doing and i had a load sorted with in 20 loadings. I fuss all the time about ammo and I probably shoot less than ten of each calibre per week. In fact probably more like ten of any calibre excluding rimfire. So a tenner a week - not too bad at all really. Having said that if you can turn that tenner into a fiver by home loading that makes £260 per year you wouldn't otherwise have. That's enough for a pretty nice used scope, maybe even a rifle or a few range days thrown in to the scheme. You also print better groups and have the fun of making your own ammo. I really don't see the obsession with cheap ammo for its own sake .I used to shoot with somebody who had a £2500 rifle but used to buy up all the cheapest milsurp ammo he could get his hands on. Last thursday I had a day at Bisley, it cost me £x loss of earnings, £x petrol, £6 lunch X2 £15 range fees x2 so whats a few pounds worth of good ammo in the grand scheme of things? Saying that, practically everyone down there last thursday was shooting Privi and some good scores went in the book.
