Dempy
I am after some help please,,, I started making this just for my own use, but I am so pleased with how it is turning out I am thinking about making lots to sell. Please remember this is just a proto type and there will be several changes to come, these will include; Oak or walnut veneered mdf, Hidden fixings so no screw heads showing, Felt lined drawers, Another cartride slot (it will then hold 250) Carpeted top. So, if I was to make them properly and sell them at a game fair, what price tag would you put on them? And please dont take the ****! Beretta28g
Whats the cost of the materials first?
J@mes
Material cost and time to construct too To be honest though, unless they come in under £300 I would want it made out of real wood too.
al4x
possibly a decent lock assuming you can't lock the back of your Hilux
Salop Matt
I keep thinking of making myself something simlar for our jimny but storing it when not in use would be the biggest issue. What you have looks great but personally I would want more cartridge storage room in it and i would also put a 12v car ciggi lighter port in it as well as my jimny doesnt have a rear socket ! I personaly wouldnt wannt it oak and expensive as it would have the dogs ontop of it mud and blood from game and nicks and nocks all over so as long as it was well built and half presentable then i would be happy ! Good job there
Dempy
Whats the cost of the materials first? This one cost about £60 so far, I think total material cost with oak vaneer will and carpet/rubber top will be mpre like £80-£100.

You can already buy them in real wood, but you have to add another 0 to the price, thats why I am making them this way

mad1
would the carts be loose or is that just for the photos may be possible to do a universal fit for other trucks too good luck and good idea but remember to offer discount to pw members
WGD
I would think £4 - 500 given the spec you described; the cost of materials or labour is irrelevant as it is what people will pay that is important. I don't know what competing products sell for, probably more than £500. Just a thought, rather than making a high spec version, could you make a harder wearing utility version? I would think there may be a better real world market for pickups with storage for gun, dog dummies, game, cartridges, leads, coats etc etc and perhaps a removable rack for drinks? Not sure if some rubberised or waterproof "veneer" could be used, just a suggestion. I wouldn't put an oak veneered unit like that in the back of my pickup, but I would consider something to throw all the junk it that currently gets stuck on top of, and up the sides of, the dog box. There would be room to put at least one more full slab behind that is you so wished. I am going to try it as in other double cab pick ups to see if it is universal, I am hoping it is

apache
My concern would be MDF swells when wet. What about ply? Is the draw on runners? I can see a much bigger market for a 'utility' version.
humperdingle
If you're going to use MDF, i'd use fixing blocks as opposed to screwing into the end (you can see where the layers have split in the picture) Also, MDF will be more susceptible to swelling if damp gets in. The veneers would obviously help that.

The veneers would obviously help that. I have screwed from the front for this one because it was the easiest way to put it together, this would then be taken apart and used as a template, I would then proberly fix the next one with cam dowels or something along those lines so the fixings were hidden. WGD
Another thought - if you're supplying the drink too put some decent whisky in!
vampire
My concern would be MDF swells when wet. What about ply? Is the draw on runners? I can see a much bigger market for a 'utility' version. As above,i can see a need for a 'utility' version as opposed to range rover type £1000 of oak furniture. Mdf is not best suited for these,as it is heavy not waterproof,as suggested a ply box with edges capped in real wood and a hard wearing laquer would be the way to go. Also, the hinges would be better being the piano type and the handles being brass d cups, both these would make them more durable, drawers on runners would also be more easily accessed, maybe even with removable trays ! Ex cabinet makers pedantic opinions You are going to be swamped with requests

Another vote for a utility version, with a good set of locks from me As I'd be worried about any bumps, bangs or scratches an Oak vaneer one would get in the back of my hilux Edited April 28, 2011 by J.C

Albertan_J
Looks good but the option of a dog box on top would be a good idea. You just need to look at your materials, time and labour and whatever profit you want
