WelshLamb
Would you/do you... shoot sitting ducks?? After acquiring my first gun last weekend, I have been offered to shoot some land belonging to a family member who informs me that there are "plenty of ducks on the pond you can take a shot at". But to me.... shooting a sitting duck isnt really 'sport'... is it?
The Duncan
Not out of season mate, for definite. Let em breed. Beyond that, not really comfortable with the idea myself. Duncan Edited April 28, 2011 by The Duncan
WelshLamb
To be honest I wasnt really aware there was a season for ducks! Im aware pheasants are out of season. Is there a reliable source of info for all this sort of stuff? Is BASC worth joining maybe?? Im going to start out by going to a few clay shoots. I plan to join my local gun club (Cwmbran) this sunday

Nope, definitely not the done thing When in season, ambush them in the evening as they fly back in to the pond, using non toxic shot of course

HW682
Is BASC worth joining maybe?? Yes, (although other organisations do exist). Definitely worth spending a few hours on their website though. Plenty of info on seasons, good practice guides etc.
Ian750
Yes in my opinion BASC are worth joining, but whether you do or don't, please please please familiarise yourself with the General License and also seasons for whichever quarry you are after BEFORE you go out taking shots. In this instance, as Duncan and Blunderbuss have already stated no, you are correct in your doubt, not the done thing!

WelshLamb
interesting that you are not allowed to shoot wild birds with a semi automatic?? why is this?
HDAV
interesting that you are not allowed to shoot wild birds with a semi automatic?? why is this? Where did you see that? Many many wildfowlers use semi autos for duck and geese, frowned upon on formal (driven/game) shoots, i think it is Section 1 firearms that it applies to not section 2 semi's It is illegal to use certain methods for killing or taking wildlife. Unless stated the following offences apply to both birds and mammals (mammals for the purposes of this section means: schedule 6 mammals Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985 & Isle of Man, Wildlife Act 1990 and schedule 3 mammals Conservation of Wildlife (Jersey) Law 2000) : - Any automatic or semi-automatic weapon against any schedule 6 mammal or any bird except the Bird Pest Species - Any automatic or semi-automatic weapon against any mammal or any bird (Jersey). Definition: "Automatic weapon" and "semi-automatic weapon" means any weapon which is capable of holding more than two rounds in the magazine. Section 1 fiearms, this does not apply guns held on SGC as these can only hold 2 in the magazine. Edited April 28, 2011 by HDAV
WelshLamb
So if I shot wild duck (in season) with a 3 shot semi auto, I'd be within the law? !
JustJon
You would, steel shot though. No lead near water.
The Duncan
So if I shot wild duck (in season) with a 3 shot semi auto, I'd be within the law? ! Yep. It might be a 3 shot, but the mag holds 2 - 1 is up the spout. So no probs!
WelshLamb
ahhh now that makes more sense! Ian750
Well done! Don't dream too much of shooting seasons and rules, regulations and the GL! Goodnight, time for me to go too!
HW682
You would, steel shot though. No lead near water. Just to avoid confusion: in England you have to use non-toxic shot (normally steel but more expensive alternatives are available) whether they are near water or not. This is different to Scotland. Edit: I think Wales is similar to England and that N. Ireland is similar to Scotland. Best check though. wildfowler.250
I would strongly suggest you get someone to show you the ropes. Try joining a wildfowling club or something. Clay shooting is all good for practise but it doesn't help with quarry I'D ect. In the 1/2 light I doubt you'd be able to tell species apart without someone teaching you,( i wouldnt suggest trial and error ). Have you got a dog? Invaluable for shooting but especially for wildfowl. I'd join basc for the insurance alone. Cheers! Edited April 29, 2011 by CZ452

Creeper! :yp: On a slightly different note, ducks on water seem to take a few more shots to k.o. than a flying bird. I'm guessing it's because they are bunched up. Generally I'm talking about follow up shots but as long as the duck goes to good use, it doesn't really bother me how other people get them.
