yankeedoodlepigeon
I know not to bother in hot days but is it worth going out in this wind at the moment?
artschool
I had no luck decoying earlier. Only crows were coming in the pigeons weren't interested. I should also add that holding on to your hide to stop it blowing away is not conducive to good shooting Edited April 30, 2011 by artschool
The Duncan
wind is usually very beneficial to shooting woodies as it seems to keep them on the move - the more they move, the more likely they are to see your decoy pattern and mosey in. At the moment near me they seem to have too many food options around them for the rape to be under pressure. I'm looking forwar to the harvest time myself

Lol I think I will try without the hide as already said its more like a kite in bad wind. TBH YDP, I went out with Bruno22rf a while ago after pigeons near cambridge a few weeks back - he went without hide and I brought mine and set it up. The results (getting a few more than Chris) I put down to the hide and pattern of decoys rather than waiting in hedges. It's a faff, but worth it Edited April 30, 2011 by The Duncan
proTOM1
The good wind will only work if there is anything about to shoot ,its a hard time of year . Was out today and had 25 birds most had hawthorn buds in there crops with just 1 or 2 with clover and a bit of spring rape plus i find a east wind not as good for decoying as a sw wind
motty
I know not to bother in hot days but is it worth going out in this wind at the moment? It's a mistake to think that you can't shoot pigeons on hot, still days. I've had some of my best days over the years in 25+ degree heat. Yesterday in the strong winds the pigeon were so hard to hit- jinking around like snipe.
chrispti
I know not to bother in hot days but is it worth going out in this wind at the moment? This time of the year (down here) its not really worth the effort. The wind does make for some decent roost shooting, provided you have some wood to shoot in and they are not too green yet. Been getting bags around 10 -20 birds, far more than if I went decoying.

Agreed ,some of my best bags have come in red hot conditions , a good wind can be useful in some circumstances granted but equaly I find it can be a pain in the backside in others. The Duncan
Typical. This evening, I took my HW100S pcp air in .177 for bunnies for t'pot and the Betty 12 bore for any woodies/crows passing over. It was breezy but I started on the rabbits and did pretty well - the shotgun stayed locked away. Naturally, there were plenty of woodies and crows passing overhead as I stood there with my excellent, but nonetheless, air rifle Edited May 1, 2011 by The Duncan

ayano3
Had 125 on patchy rape today in the shade of a nice hedge at the side of the field. If I had gone on the peas I would have been collecting my hide from the next county. Will try and post some pictures later if the kids show me how from this phone . ayano3
I always get there about 8am then have a look around for pigeon flight lines and feeding birds, I never set up where there is no birds. It's best to know exactly where on the land your birds are feeding as you have to go to them as unless you're very lucky they won't come to you !!!
