A dog is for life

A dog is for life, however long that might turn out to be.

Some of you will have seen my postings about our Springer pup, Bess. When we got her she was a poorly little thing and it took us some time and patience to get her well again. Once we’d done that she was on a roll, full of mischief and energy and really great to have around the house. Got me out walking (been told since that I might have walked her too far for her age) and she generally enriched the lives of both myself and Debbie, my partner. Some of you will have heard that she met with a fatal accident last Saturday, took my eye off the ball for a minute and that was that. No point going back over it again, I’ve beaten myself up enough now and wanted to consider the positive aspects of the short time we had with her. Taught me a lot about myself on reflection; how stressed I’d got without even realising, how cynical in some ways and unable to enjoy the simple uncomplicated pleasures in life.

I’ve learnt that lesson at her expense I suppose but it almost seems as though she came through our lives for a reason, it feels bl**dy spooky in a way but you’d only perhaps understand that fully if the same has happened to you in similar circumstances. I don’t want to appear condescending in saying that, it could be seen that way I guess.

I buried her under the shade of a fir tree in the woods where we walked together.

It may seem callous but I went out yesterday and got us another pup, we both agreed that the house seemed empty and cold without the clattering of claws on the floor tiles and the general pell mell of puppy life. The new Pup is called Jessie and I’ll post a few pics shortly, apologies in advance to those who will be bored to death by them ;-).

Moral of the story I suppose is that “there is no fool like an old fool”, I like to feel that I’m the wiser for having Bess in my life for that short time, I hope to be a hell of a lot older and wiser before I have to pick up that spade again.

Sincere thanks to all who have expressed their sympathies.

R.I.P. Bess you'll be missed.

OR,

Good for you, I personally am glad you have been out and got another pup. I too have a springer pup who, when I got him had been bitten by one of the litter. He was very ill for a while and still has a weepy right eye due to the infection.

It was a terrible shame what happened to Bess (god bless her). But life does go on and getting another pup is what you needed to do. I woild be totally devastateed if anything like that happened to Merlin but I am sure that I would do the same as you.

Take care of the little tike, and I look forward to seeing the pictures

Cheers

Martin

Sorry OR I spelt her name wrong.

Heres hoping you can find as much joy and happiness with the new pup as you found with your last trouble maker

We lost our Portuguese Podengo last year after he slipped his leash and ended up under a car :D

Again i felt like yourself blaming myself etc but thats something we can't change.

I am also going to get a new dog but unfortunatley there are only 3 known breeders in the UK and at £350 a pup thats a lot of money

Best of luck to you and your good lady and i hope the puppy brings a smile back to you both.

LG
