njc110381
Just thought I'd mention this as it's a question that gets asked now and again. I was out yesterday with my Baikal Hushpower .410, just having a bit of a stalk around looking for bunnies. Well there were no bunnies about, but I did get a Fox! As I was creeping around a corner of a hedge I spotted it - no idea I was there at less than 15 yards. I stood for a second and considered my options then decided that at that range it would work, so I whacked it. It fell over like it had been hit by lightening! Both me and John were pretty shocked by the result and it made the day quite a memorable one. Who'd have thought 16g of #6 would be so destructive?! I won't post a picture as it's a bit messy and there's no need. Just thought I'd share this for anyone doing a search, or to give confidence to anyone who's not sure such a small gun can work. As long is the range is right they're more than enough gun.

silver pigeon 3
Good shooting mate, and good on you for not posting the pictures if it was a bit of a mess , I don't know what choke you have in The .410 but at sub 15 yards i doubt there was a great deal of spread , it was probaly like being hit with a very fast housebrick. unclestuffy
My fully mod biakal .410 has a very tight pattern and using magnums seems to give it a bit extra (probably the shot density)but it has more powder to burn i think.
steve_b_wales
.410 shotguns are very under estimated. Well done on getting the fox. Don't forget to add it to the PW tally.

njc110381
I will add this one and the rest I've shot this year to the tally. I didn't even realise we did a Fox count! Pictures would have been a bit much. Both eyes were forced out of their sockets giving it that cartoon shocked look. There wasn't that much blood so I think the bulk of the shot stayed inside the skull. I was amazed I got within 15 yards of it. That sort of thing doesn't happen often although I've had a few like it.
Bluebarrels
Ok,ive a question? Why is it okay to shoot a fox at around 15 yds with 16g of 6 shot .410 cart? But not okay to shoot a pigeon/crow at 20 yds with 28g of 7 1/2 shot 12 g cart Not having a dig BB

But not okay to shoot a pigeon/crow at 20 yds with 28g of 7 1/2 shot 12 g cart Not having a dig BB I never said it wasn't ok? 7.5 shot is a bit small to carry it's energy and penetrate thick feathers at long range but at 20 yards it should work. Are you sure people weren't suggesting that you should use a heavier shot so you don't limit the shots you can take to close ones? I know a chap who uses 7.5s for Pigeons all the time. It's not unusual for him and his mate to get 100 bags so they must work ok?
al4x
its because who only shoots pigeons at 20 yards I've had a fox with a 7.5 28g clay load and that didn't need the second barrel, though was a similar distance away while shooting squirrels
SPEEDY
I have no worries over shooting foxes with a 4100gn, shot a heap with one as a kid, however if I couldn't get 3" #4 shot then I would buy roll crimp shells, POP the top, swap the shot with BB's or split shot sinkers and that realy used to smack them good. Bluebarrels
Well if your okay shooting foxs with 16g loads, thats your choice personally i think its too light a load BB Not having a pop just saying i woudnt do it Edited May 11, 2011 by Bluebarrels

I carry a couple of BB cartridges with me in case I see a fox, just after Christmas I was looking for rabbits in the snow when I saw a big fox sniffing his way towards me. I knew that if I tried to remove the No6 that were loaded he would hear me so I sat tight and waited until he got close then let him have it in the head. Didn't even twitch. If you're at all unsure then it's best not to shoot. I've patterned the gun at various ranges and at 15 yards the spread is easily in a 4" circle. That's a lot of punch in such a small space. If you'd like to see what damage it did I'll happily PM a picture to you. I'd just rather not post it openly as some people would prefer not to see it.
