sako751sg
Fine dry morning so held out at quarter past four for a wee look for a buck or fox.First port of call was a quarry that overlooks a place of 200ish acres with a pond which usually holds a couple bucks. The acres, not the pond of course.Straight away i saw a buck which i thought looked a cracker,so jumped in the jeep and drove the couple of miles to the farm.Easy to get on to him as he was way downhill so i walked the 300 yards to the top of the bank and saw him straight away.As soon as i glassed him at this range i realised he was a very old beast with a smallish 6 point head which was a bit of a dissapointment but not for long.He was only about 100 away so i lay down and took the shot when he turned broadside, and he dropped instant.Going by the teeth and face hes very old and one i havent noticed before. Next stop was about 6 miles away where there were a few does and 2 bucks. They have been hammering the trees here and every buck gets the bullet if possible. The easiest buck was about 250 away so i jumped into a wee leg of the plantation which meant i could be in cover up to within 100 yards of him.Id only gone about 20 yards and Rab seemed very focused at the fence line about 50 yards in front, when i saw the buck running towards us,jump the fence and start rubbing trees approx 50 yards away.I managed to click a couple of pics before extending the bipod and taking a sitting shot on him,to which he ran into the trees. When we got to the impact point, there were copius amount of light frothy blood and about 20 yards to the left he was lying dead and a good trail of lung blood the whole way.A bonny wee 6 point heed and another few trees saved.Havent weighed yet but both around the 17kg mark. Also a couple of pics of the cleaned heed from 3 weeks ago.Its dried down to 660g and ive dipped for volume and scored and it should be around the 145-150 points.I scored at 148 but there will be a difference when its done by the real men. sako751sg
Cheers all, many thanks. well done buddy great read and crackin pic lucky you it peed wi rain here all day. bucks here seem to be more active in the morning out sat at 4am and seen 5 and never got a shot at one (all on the move or seen me first)how are your bucks for ticks here there covered Weather seems to break every weekend to rain and hardly getting oot here the now.Hopefully this spell will clear back to the fine again soon.Love the mornings fella as the roe seem to be more relaxed and usually that bit more away from the comfort zone especially not long after first light.Every buck has had ticks but not to the extent some folks are having. They were on the go very early on but the two yesterday only had 1 each that stuck out although there would have been more.Hate the little ******** and try to avoid them.Cover is going to be the next problem as its already high enough in some places to effect a clear shot with the good weather.Hows your own stalking going and any decent heads about? M ROBSON
Great pics Dave, I love the look of that pond valley. That big buck will do well, do I see a symetrical 8 points? The bucks here have been out early, we grassed a nice silver medal on Saturday morning at 04:35, and saw another big medal buck but he went back into the wood by the time we stalked to him, gone in by 05:15! I've stalked this area 15 times in the last 4 weeks and this was the first time i'd seen either of these bucks since March!!! Covers way high here, they are spraying growth regulator on the Rape to stop it, some of it's 6 foot high! Loads of ticks here too. Cheers, Mark. Good shooting mate! Way too busy work ways Frenchie but i never work a weekend so am restricted to that just noo.Weather has broke a bit after the fine spell so not getting out as much as i would like but im sure it will get better.Lovely scenery and great for wildlife and very lucky to have it. Cracking bit of land with the pond Mark and have a chance of most quarry species with the cover it provides.Outstanding duck pond too which i have had for about 10 years and first shot it this season past. The buck i think will be judged a 7 pointer as the 8th could be classed as just an offering.Lovely even head and id never saw him until the week i got him. That place is 140 acres total and last year 15 bucks came off it.In the bits i take all bucks clean in,they are replaced in a matter of days just now with bucks getting displaced so there is never a shortage,as long as there is neighbouring ground with a decent population.Im dreading the cover getting out of hand as it definetly makes stalking way harder but it adds to the challenge.Early mornings my favourite but as you say, some are just heading in after a night munching which means getting into place earlier is called for.
