jasper3
My old springer cross is not looking good, he is 16 now and starting to struggle He don't seem to be in pain and the vet has clarified that, but I think his time is near
kent
they say when we get old we look back to the good times with those happy memories, it is also said dogs don't keep these sort of memories. Its gut wrenching when the day comes but it is way better a few weeks early than a few hours late 16 is a good age to reach.

steve_b_wales
Very sad, but you already know that it's best for your dog. Think of the happy times that you all shared together. Steve.

jasper3
Thanks lads, yep cried like a baby , but good to know he is not suffering anymore, My little cocker came in and licked the old boys face, he then tried to nudge him, i carried him to the vets car and gave him kiss goodbye, he has been a cracking dog not much good with the gun, but hey!!! we love them all the same, sleep tight old fella
ross-obrien
I always think of this poem everytime the passing of our old springer merlin comes to mind. IF IT SHOULD BE If it should be that I grow weak And pain should keep me from my sleep, Then you must do what must be done, For this last battle cannot be won. You will be sad, I understand. Don't let your grief then stay your hand. For this day, more than all the rest, Your love for me must stand the test. We've had so many happy years. What is to come can hold no fears. You'd not want me to suffer so; The time has come -- please let me go. Take me where my need they'll tend, And please stay with me till the end. Hold me firm and speak to me, Until my eyes no longer see. I know in time that you will see The kindness that you did for me. Although my tail its last has waved, From pain and suffering I've been saved. Please do not grieve -- it must be you Who had this painful thing to do. We've been so close, we two, these years; Don't let your heart hold back its tears. --- Anonymous --- Ross

ross-obrien
I once read it in shooting times when merlin young and bouncing about, but its sentiment was very true when that horrible decision had to be made. Sorry for your loss Jasper. Ross Edited June 3, 2011 by ross-obrien

ziplex
It's one of the most awful and saddening things to go through....I lost two of mine a few years back within weeks of one another, the first with an illness that came on out of the blue, she was the younger one too and that seemed to speed up the old girls demise, it was like she'd given up. Never forget them both and i'm of the opinion i'll never get a dog to match either of them again. You obviously cared for him and no doubt done good by him as said, remember the good times. -Mongrel-
Sorry to hear of your loss fella, it's an absolute choker on you when you have to make that final vet visit, I too blubbed like a 10 year old, but looked at it as the least I could do as payback for 18 years of devoted service, made it seem a small price to pay despite the pain. jasper3
Thankyou all so much for the kind words, It was the right thing to do, we couldn't let the old boy suffer, and to be honest, i think he gave us that look to say, make the call. thier not just dogs, they are great friends, you can tell them anything and know they won't be dropping you in it the wife and kids have found it hard, but i guess the kids have grown up with him, we have some great memories that we will cherish,
