il cacciatore
I have alittle bit of spare cash and I'm looking for a cheap pump action shotgun (non FAC). I'm ringing around the local gun shops every now and again to see if any second hand come in since they arent plentiful nowdays. If I can find one what should I be looking for as to condition? Is there any make that I should avoid? Any info is much appreciated as I've never owned one before.
Hodmedod.one
Don't buy a pump, buy a semi auto instead. I have owned both and pumps are not in the same league as semis.

webber
I wouldnt give a pump action space in my cabinet. Not the best tool for our type of shooting. webber
il cacciatore
Yeh, you are correct I guess. But that raises the question, why do people buy them? Alot of people buy the FAC guns too cause there are alot of them floating about. For pest control you would think that they would buy a FAC semi auto if they need some sort of shotgun. the last engineer
the main reason for a pump over a semi was/is reliability, the semis of past used to foul jam screw up call it what you will on a regular basis, every 28 days, to bright, to dull, any number of reasons, maintanence or lack thereof, the old pump worked unless someone broke your arm, there are those who run a pump as well as any auto, the old model of choice being the winchester model 12 , i shoot with an old goat who won his first and second Canadian skeet title with this gun. the pump will take abuse better than an auto, you will have fun with a pump but get tired sooner, have fun buddy try it . mossy835
pumps are ok but when you come to sell them nobody wants to give much for them i would not give more then £50 for one .
Baldrick
I bought a Remington pump for wildfowling. Far more reliable than my 11-87 semi auto. Just the tool for the job, but completely useless in most other situations. A fair few people use the for Practical Shotgun, but they're highly modified FAC pump actions. throdgrain
Just to be different, Id have to say that although I know its slower than a semi (considerably!) , I love shooting my Mossberg 500. I enjoy it far more than the Winchester 101 I own! Having said that, Im thinking of trading the 101 in for a Beretta Extrema at some stage, so then Ill have a pump AND a semi, though I still think Ill like the pump. I even take it clay shooting sometimes, much to everyone elses disgust

Got some expected responses: A - Hello, I was just phoning to see if you have any second hand pump action shotguns? B - I'm sorry did you say pump action??! A - Yes I did indeed. B - No no no, none of that sort of thing! Though did find a Winchester 1200.

Martin I have a Winchester Model 12 with the flash suppressor on the muzzle has a feel good factor of 15 out of 10  Nice gun considering it's age (1930s i beleive) There is one on the Guntrader website for near £900 Looks like i am sitting on a money maker I also have a Mossberg 500 and thats got a feel good factor too :o But semis i ALSO like. In all i have to date Browning (2) both semi Franchi (1) semi Winchester (1) mod 12 pump Mossberg (1) 500 pump Escort (1) Semi Foreign (1) semi also 2 O/Us one AYA one Rizzini 2 410s one SBS and the other single barrel (both hammer) and a 12G single barrel non hammer Now need to order a new cabinet LG Edited April 8, 2006 by Lord Geordie
the last engineer
hate to burst your bubble LG those winney model 12's are two a penny over here, the only one i seen that held a value was a model 12 with a 28" barrel and a simmons rib fitted, skeet configuration, the gun was marked at $850 ( 425 quid ish) , great gun to turn into a street sweeper though, the use of a hacksaw and file required, i have used the mod12 in skeet and 5 stand for the fun of it cant get back into that do it yourself routine, first 12 gauge i owned back in the UK was a savage 5 shot pump, had to put that on my firearms ticket, would have cost more to fix it. most of the 12 gauges go for around $25-50 pending condition, now if you see an old model 410 for sale theres your investment or you could give me the nod Martin
il cacciatore
Whats the Winchester model 1200 like? I'm guessing that it is an improvement on the model 12 since it replaced it but is it really anybetter?
the last engineer
depends on who you talk to, any of the diehard mod 12 boys swear by them, its like that old pair of slippers you dont want to throw away, the 1200 i cant comment on having not used any, but if you see an old mod 12 cheap pick it up it will work like a charm, clean it out and watch the action slide into place, the old boys swear they can load it from by throwing a shell in and tip the gun down to close. stupid thing is ive seen it done too.
