A brutal sport that is most entertaining to watch, unlike boxing that is mostly toot. Even if the opponents are a bit pants they normally put on a good show by beating the daylights out of each other or at least spilling a bit of claret. I am tempted to go and watch a live show when the next one is advertsied around the Essex/London area.

I train MMA/BJJ. And although it does, and is quite brutal, alot of skill and training goes into it, before your allowed to fight at Entry level. Alot of people do it just for the keeping fit, as it is more interesting than just goin to the gym. Also a great self-defence martial art.

Isn't that an average Friday night out in Basildon?

Fair comment, wasn't meant as a dis, I'm sure even the dodgy looking fella's have trained and have plenty of skill and can also handle themselves in a street brawl.

Only homos do that!

All the MMA stuff I have watched involved a lot of floor holds. It was really boring. I thought it was gonna be proper dirty and bloody, I have seen better scraps up the high street on a Friday night.

Talking of martial arts, i used to work with a bloke once who asked me if i "was into the arts". Me being a bit posh thought he meant "The arts", classical music, ballet, and such. Anyhoo, i replied "i sometimes listen to classic FM when the mood takes me. He replied "No you cnute! martial arts, kick boxing", He made a nice big dent in the dry wall after i kicked him in the guts, it was a beut, sat there gasping for breath and nearly in tears cos he couldn't breathe, how we laughed!

I practise bjj which is pretty much a foundation art of mma :good:

MMA is a brilliant sport and great fun to watch , the skill that goes into learning one art is immense .

Most of the pro fighters are experts in multiple fighting arts , so in my opinion they are far more skilled than boxers

Some real good replies here guys. I my self have started in the traditional martial arts many moons ago starting off doing traditional wado ryu karate. It was very strict no fancy gi suits or special badges only bruised egos and bloody knuckles. Then i started to train mma, i started off at caged steel in dewsbury for a short while then went on to pastures new. Keep the banter coming lads!!!!!!! :yp:

Thats what a lot of people say! My mates at work say mma fighters are shi/* and all they do is roll on the floor and hug. BUT unless you have trained bjj or vale tudo and know just how hard it is then you just dont know! We used to roll after a 45 minute warm up sparring when your arms are gassed out and you could barely lift them. As all the lads what have done it will tell you its hard.

I personally would say karate is the major platform for mma, you look at all the past and current champions in the sport today.... GSP=Karate Lyoto Machida=Karate and thats just 2 ufc fighters. If you went on to look into other organisations such as K1 you would find karate fighters like, Stephen blitz leko, semmi schilt, Andy hug, and the list goes on.Im not saying bjj isnt also a major in any way. :yp:

I love watching it, I started off in Judo as a young lad even got in the Rochdale Observer as a member of a wining tournament team then went on to train muay thai in my late teens. Not trained in quite a few years, my last fight was a trip into the boxing ring about 3 years ago and I realised how unfit & ring rusty I had become.

I would not class K1 as true MMA as its just a striking sport so it’s no good for wrestlers, BBJ and Judo etc.

I think BJJ was definitely the most dominant in the beginning of the UFC with Royce Gracie & co, then the wrestlers like Tito learnt to defend submissions & took over for a bit, then the strikers like chuck learnt to stuff the takedowns and throw the over hand right to great effect.

The sport is still evolving, Machida & Silva using the front kick is the next new thing.

The Achilles heel of most British fighters in the UFC is being able to stay on their feet against the wrestlers, the one that can likes to circle the wrong way into the power hand of his opponent.

The days of just going into the ring with one dominant style are now long gone, it’s like a game of rock, paper, scissors all the styles seem to produce a champion for a while but not one can dominate.

I think GSP is the greatest exponent of this, he wrestles a striker, strikes against a wrestler and if he does find himself on his back uses BJJ. :good:

What concerns me about MMA is the lack of apparent respect for the opponent. What do I mean by that? All to often you see somebody knocked out at yet the punches, knees, elbows continue to reign in until the ref step in. Often it is obvious the the opponent is out of it and unable to defend themselves but the blows are relentless. I've fought on the rugby field and at a very basic level in the boxing ring but I couldn't do that. I admire their fitness though.

Not a fan of MMGay

Jacks of all trades and masters of none.

Admire anyone that has the balls to step in the ring though.

When I've watched it it always seems to be the same, fighters are either good at stand up or good on the floor.

It got very boring at first with the Gracie bros taking people down and keeping them there for the entire fight until they gained a submission.

Then they changed the rules and stand the fighters up after a while, that sort of ruined it for the Ju-Jitsu guys.

Probably just me being and old purist but it's not for me.

The sport is still evolving and is beginning to level out so matches are far more even and exciting these days .

The standard of striking has improved tenfold since the early days and i would encourage you to watch some of the new guys like jon jones to see how far the sport has come :good:
