Cosd
Out with my good friend Denny (XR3I)Essex yesterday, and though I am not going to boast a great day either in numbers nor in the quality of my shooting which was actually pretty poor, I hit the longest bird I have taken to date and was pretty pleased with myself I paced the fallen bird at 76 long paces and estimated with Denny that I hit it at about 60 yards. Nothing wanted to know yesterday in the way of decoys and this bird was no different; It swung in fast from our left toward the pattern and swung back round flying fast, low and away from us slightly to the left. I missed with the first barrel and dropped him with the second. Denny then needed to put his sunglasses on to protect his eyes from the glare of my teeth Ironically my longest kill shot was taken on a day where I really wasn't shooting well at all So for some light hearted Friday chest beating of who's got the biggest, what's the longest bird you've taken and how big was the smile on your face Cartridge used: Gamebore Clear Pigeon 30g 6 Edited July 15, 2011 by Cosd

worthy130
This thread is a bad idea. If you do take long shots keep it to yourself as most the time you will not outright kill whatever it is you are shooting at and we owe it to our quarry to make it as quick and painless as possible. ATB That's fair comment, and I have to say I totally agree with the respect to your quarry part, I like to think that I am a responsible shot. In truth if the bird started at 60yards out I wouldn't usually take that shot but as I was already on it reactions took over and I did take the shot. I challenge any shooter to say they haven't taken a shot that maybe in hindsight wasn't the best idea; On the same token I will also admit clipping birds that have flown away which were shot at at 25 yards! This isn't about a competition, I was just curious to see distances people have taken. George Digweed boasts taking plenty of birds at 70 yards, maybe we should get the DVD banned
Zaiyn
In fairness, we are not all George Digweed. That said, 55 yards crossing right to left. Eley 32g of 6 1/2, 3/4 choke and a dead-in-the air kill. I was elated, to say the least
Diceman
Hare, 704 yards. 18g No.7 shot in .410. Sweet.
ack-ack
I got a blue bottle on the lounge wall with a BB gun from about 5 yds which is equivalent to a mouse at 50 yds or perhaps a horse at 1.5km. I'd hazzard a guess that it could even be on par with twanging an Elephant at 4km.
Frenchieboy
I took on a bird that was 6 foot 10 tall! I am only 5 foot 7 and was in the "free standing" position so I used a bucket! "Ahh", you might say, "She could easily have kicked the bucket out from underneath you"! But I was wise to that trick - I stuck it over her head and swung on the handle! Does that count? Redgum
Theres a vid on youtube somewhere of George Digweed shooting crows out to 70 odd yards, quite amazing as he doesnt miss much and the birds were just crumpling.Like to know what carts and chokes he was using, the vid could be edited but he doesnt miss what he shoots at. team tractor
I shot a pigeon at 62 yrds with 6's and was stone dead but again I recently shot a puma at 210 yrds with my airrifle in its toe and killed it instantly

Kes
Whilst not recommending distance shooting - being guilty myself - I have 2 to add. Once, bored waiting for pheasants to emerge from the last bits of cover and not having shot any that drive, I shot at a jackdaw crossing the line from back to front. The keepers commented, "who is the bloody fool shooting at that he'll never hit it. One pellet through its head at about 80 yds. Standard Eley VIP 36 gram 1/2 choke, just a lucky one pellet. Same shoot on another day, same lack of pheasants, I shot a snipe at a (guessed) 80+ yds. It landed 70 yds from where I shot it. No wind. Same type of cartridge. I guess 80+, angle of shot 70 degrees ish. 70yds/Cosine 70 degrees = ? Both shots witnessed - no-one more surprised than me.
