hi lads

I was wondering if you could tell me what all the different size bores are for just interested.I understand that the 12g is considered to be a good all rounder

I thought that 8 and 10 bores where used for wild fowling

and 20g use to be thought of as a Ladys gun

410 was a kids gun when i was younger but what about the rest

Er well in order of size largest first.

4 Bore (punt/static guns)

8 Bore punt or shouldered

10 Bore Shouldered popular for fowling

12 bore defacto

16 bore older but still used for game some say the best for driven game

20 bore lighter but can throw plenty of lead when needed often referred to a youths or ladies gun, not true

28 bore good Bird gun challenging shot used on walked grouse and what ever you fancy

36 aka .410 smallest of the common bores can be used on fethear and fur good for short range pest control and challenging yourself

Then you have 9mm shot shell and .22RF shot shell garden guns used for Rats and pest in Gardens

Actually the correct term is Gauge not bore except for the .410 where bore(measured in inches) is the correct terminolgy :good:

Gauge refers to IIRC how many perfectly barrel fitting balls of lead it takes to make up 1Lb of lead, it comes from the old days of cannons :)

You gave the wrong info on 4 bores as all the chaps I know use em as shoulder guns although they are also used as punt guns . The tell tale sign of one that has been used as a punt gun is a hole in stock that allows a recoil rope to go through , I had a Tolley 4g like that it was great fun to shoot especially when I took it to our clay shoot . But they are not a gun for skinny whimps I weigh 15stone & I took a low shot at a greylag & it put me on my back in all the mud on the Lough edge ! thank God nobody saw it happen ! . Pole Star
