DO we take our own rifles, or get some their? My g/f is Polish, so she can be official translater.

Also I think her uncle has a farm out there!

Cheapest way to get to Poland is Buzz/Ryanair to Berlin, then train to Warsaw. Flying BA direct to Warsaw is pricey.

I'd be 100% interested.

Hi NeVeTaS

I am sure we can take out own rifles if the trip comes off, I will be taking a shotgun and using Slugs.

From what I have heard the best time is Febuary and Wildboar Deer and Foxes may be shot.

I am not sure of the costs yet but when there are enough people interested I will look into it.

3 of my friends are in for sure as we talked about the trip for the last 2 years.

I don't think the rifles most people use in the UK would be very good for the job.

Rifled slugs in a shotgun would be better, if you haven't got something up around .375 calibre.

9.3 X 64 is a popular round for pigs.

I expect most of the shooting will be done at ranges of less than 25 yards at a running target that might run straight at you if you don't stop it in it's tracks.

I HAVE A CONTACT THAT OPERATES A DRIVEN WILDBOAR HUNTING OPERATION IN TURKEY.

I WENT FOR A 4 DAY DRIVEN SHOOT IN FEBRUARY THIS YEAR. THE HOTEL IS SUPERB, GREAT BEATING TEAM, GOOD DOGS AND PLENTY OF WILDBOAR.

I JOINED A GROUP OF ITALIANS FOR MY HUNT, WE SHOT 12 IN 4 DAY'S. THE GROUP OF FRENCHMEN WHO LEFT THE DAY OF OUR ARRIVAL SHOT 28 IN 4 DAY'S WHICH WAS MORE THE NORMAL.

I USED A SHOTGUN WITH BRENNEKE SLUG AND GOT 2 MALES ONE OF THEM A SMALL JUVENILE AND THE OTHER A SILVER MEDAL BOAR OF 19.5 CMS TUSK LENGTH.

THE MOST IMPORTANT BIT OF THIS OPERATOR IS THEIR IS NO TROPHY FEES FOR MALES REGARDLESS OF SIZE, BUT THEIR IS A $100.00 FINE FOR FEMALES.

A GOOD LEVEL OF FITNESS IS REQUIRED DUE TO THE MOUNTAINS THAT NEED TO BE CLIMBED.

A VERY GOOD EXPERIENCE FOR ME, AND I WILLINGLY RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE.

P.M. SHOULD YOU WANT MORE DETAILS.

ALL THE VERY BEST...

It's yet another thing to get on your F.A.C.

Get as much as you can before any more restrictions are thought up.

Get in all the sport you can in the poorer countries before they join the Euro!!!

It can only get worse!!!

A neighbour of mine does a bit of shooting abroad. I'll see if he is interested if you can find out how much it will cost.

You could have gun on a 400 bird pheasant day for that!!!

OR rent a hell of a lot of acres of rough shooting for a year.

OR shoot a day most weeks with Phill Beasley or Gary for a year.

These guides have got to make a living somehow.

Reference calibres .243 will kill boar. My friend went out to Poland last year and shot 2 or 3, shot placement is the critical thing to remember. Bare in mind that if you take the shot and wound the animal you still pay for it.

My friend is currently in Poland as I write this on a hunting holiday. On this trip he has taken his new .30-06 rifle.

Hope this helps

  • 3 weeks later...

Guys

I am off to Germany in Sept Wild Boar shooting and they have recommended either my .308 or 6.5x55 (180 gr round) for shooting them. Its all high seat stuff tho. We too have a big fine for shooting females so get the id part sorted, especially in the dark

We are flying with Ryanair and they put an embargo on carrying rifles etc effective from 1st April 2003 so they will not take your rifles or shotguns out there.

I have never shot slugs thro my 391 although I think I did read somewhere you should not put them thro a multichoke or a gun with tight chokes...... cant be sure but it would be best to check this out just in case.

I will let you all know how I get on Total cost for 3days all inclusive is £550. for comparison purposes.

BRENNEKE SLUG PERFORMS BEST USING HALF CHOKE...

I WAS AMAZED BY THE ACCURACY OF THEM...

FIRED THROUGH HALF CHOKE, USING MY BERETTA 391 WE WERE GETTING 4 INCH GROUPS AT 100 YDS...

CYLINDER CHOKE GAVE MUCH LARGER GROUPS...

I ALSO ASKED FOR INFO FROM THE LEADING MAKERS OF BRENNEKE'S AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT IT WAS BEST TO USE HALF CHOKE...

BRENNEKE SLUG IS A DEADLY TOOL WHEN USED AGAINST WILDBOAR, IF IT IS HIT BY ONE IT WILL BE FOUND BY THE DOGS, EVEN IF IT RUNS OFF DUE TO THE MASSIVE DAMAGE THEY CAUSE. THE BOAR WILL CERTAINLY DIE FROM THE SHOT...

THIS IS NOT THE CASE WITH A BADLY PLACED SHOT FROM A RIFLE...

ALL THE BEST...

My dad does alot of Boar in Sweeden, he also shoots elk there. On his .308 and .30-06 he has mounts that can be slid off and a red dot sight put on. The rounds he uses are around 180 grain and sometimes bigger. Boar are tough B*sterds, they have been known to run down the line and get slugs from everyone and carry on going! Shot placement is vital, **** em off and they come eat you. If you shoot a pigglet (bearing in mind a one year old is a couple of 100lb's) make shure the sow isnt in the bushes when you get out of the high seat, most of the Sweeds have or know of some one who has been attacked. My friend got chased up a seat by about 10 boar last year  He had to stay there for three hours after dark

Its great fun, go for it

A Canadian Perspective

I have shot wild boar with a slug gun and have had no problem stopping a 275lb boar. Do not try head shots as the shape of the boars head incourages the slug to travel around the skull instead of penetrating it. The best shot that I have found, and that is a devistating kill shot, is directly behind the shoulder point turning the heart and lungs into jelly.

As far as slugs go there is a wide variety available, you can buy them for open choke, modified choke or full choke. Remember do not fire an open choke slug through a full choked barrel. You can also buy smooth slugs, rifled slugs, solid slugs, copper jaketed slugs, poly cores, poly jackets and others.

Todays slugs are far superior to there predesesors of the early market. No longer are you shooting a ball of lead that is only accurate out to 25 yards, you can now shoot acurrate 3 inch groups out to 125yards. Try the differant manufacturer web sites to see what is available, and make arrangements through your ammo dealers to get some samples of the differant makes in. Not all guns will fire the same slug in the same manner with group variance being as great as 12 inches. The kick from a 2 3/4 inch slug is minor, however it increases substantially when you increase to a 3 inch shell.

Living in southern Ontario I am restricted to useing a slug gun for Whitetailed Deer as well. Again todays slugs have no problem putting a 300lb deer down at 60 to 75 yards with a well placed heart or lung shot. I am personally getting 3 inch groups shooting Federal 2 3/4 inch copper core smooth bore slugs, through an Itheca feather light pump action shot gun in full choke at 80 yards. I have never checked out past this distance as most of my own shooting is inside of 25 yards due to terrain and cover.

Hope this helps.......NTTF

So you don't think I need the deerslayer barrel for my Ithaca Featherlite. It's got an improved cylinder barrel. What solid slug would you recommend for it?

Rjimmer:

My Ithica loves Federal amunition, and absolutly hates Winchester. One of my perfered rounds is the Federal Premium Barnes Expander, this is a 1 onze Sabot slug with a hollow point. Although not copper cored or jacketed it is an exceptional slug with consistant acurracy.

The deer slayer barrel is an excellent addition as it is rifled instead of smooth bored, and as a rule will only improve accuracy. Another nice thing about this barrel is that it is drilled and tapped for a scope giving those of us with tired eyes a little help, expecially in early morning and dusk.

I would suggest that you fire a couple of boxes $15.99 Cdn of slugs through your barrel and then make a decission. Nice to see another bottom eject fan, who has consideration for others in the duck blind. I hate wearing other peoples hot brass.
