Amexian
If you were to zero your rifle for one bullet that would be used for everyday rabbiting but also capable of dispatching the odd fox out to about 150 yards which bullet would you choose. I'm torn between 17gr Remington gold tip and 20gr CCI Gamepoint. What would you use?

Salop Matt
17GRN Rems or any other 17GRN, but personally I dont shoot bunnys past 120 and fox past 70 ! This is down to what I am comfortable with but others shoot far further! each to ther own but some say the 20grn ammo doesnt open up so well and tends to pass through with reduced energy transfer ! 90% of shooters seem to prefer the 17grn

eccles
I agree with Kent keep it under 100y then 17gr will do the job

Dekers
17g every time, but I too have to suggest a 150 yard fox shot is not the best plan for this round, stick to accurate shot placement , out to a max of about 100 yards for the fox. ATB!
Beardo
It's been done to death, there are dozens of threads on the subject. Use the 17gr ballistic tips and avoid the 20gr hps.

Totally agree! And even then stick to sub 100 yards for Charlie with the HMR! Even at that range with a 17HMR accurate shot placement is extremely important for fox! 150 yard with a 17HMR should not really be classed as a "humane shot" in my opinion! the enigma
When I bought my rifle, the dealer was out of 17grn,so I took 100 20grns to get me started. I've used them mostly on paper, but have also taken a magpie and a handful of rabbits with them. The magpie was taken at about 50yds and had a wound channel you could have put your finger through, but with the rabbits,as said above, they all passed straight through, leaving tiny entry and exit wounds. So,I got myself 50 17grn to try. They're in a different class altogether. Won't be buying 20s again. Frenchieboy
Enigma mate, This thing about the 20g 17HMR ammunition not expanding properly is something that has come up several times with the 20g, I was even warned about this by a RFD who had 20g that he was willing to sell me but advised against it for exactly the same reason - On rabbits they often pass straight through without expanding and you end up with runners! Because of this I stick to Hornady 17g in either Red or Blue tips - I don't find any difference between the two and have never had the silghtest problem with them in my CZ 452! Dekers
What about the 17grs CCI TNT HP? EEERRRrrrr, what about them, I've not come across these, I would be interested in some views/opinions from someone who has. The HMR excels as a 17g Ballistic Tip, I am yet to find any other ammo that is particularly worth considering! Cheers!

Dekers
CCI TNT tests Cheers. But even in a lot of these unscientific tests it doesn't seem to come out a winner, and has anyone actually found/used this ammo in the uk, views? We tinker and play all the time (why not) and new calibres (even the HMR is only just over 10 years old), and ammo turn up all the time, maybe something better than the 17g Ballistic Tip will turn up but for whatever reason that does seem to be the area the HMR excels at! Amexian
Actually yes I have used this ammo, 17gr TNT JHP, I bought some when I first got my HMR. I've used it on rabbit at about 75 yards and as I recall the reaction to a head shot is not as dramatic as the Accutips, no explosive fur flying impact they just dropped on the spot more like being hit with a 22 sub. I was also interchanging them with the Accutips without re-zeroing or adjusting aim which was useful, I think they are both rated 2550fps. I found half a box in the safe last night I'll give them another go at the weekend and see how I get on. Anyone any opinions on how this round would work for fox? Having read all of your comments re my original question I am quite happy to stick with the ballistic tips over gamepoints and I appreciate the advice but is interesting to learn about different bullet characteristics and uses, I am a relative newbie to this calibre.
