4 lonely pigs trotters sitting on a ride

Recommended Posts

Mooooorning,

Taking a walk through one of my permissions a few days back. I notice the pens have been tidied up for the season, a few birds already in too. Now this is the odd (or maybe not) bit; I get to a T-junction of two rides on the perimeter of the wood and laying in the middle of the track are 4 pigs trotters, evenly spaced apart. These were maybe 20ft from the pen. They were still there last night.

My initial thought was fox baiting, with a guess the trotters were cheap bits of meat and ok to waste. But then I started thinking a bit more on it (maybe too much). Why would you put 4? Surely you'd spread it out over a few intervals to get the fox used to it and come to the same point regularly? Maybe they were put there to actually entice the fox to the pen (rival shoot?). Or maybe they're loaded up with poison?

Thoughts and comments please...

Ben

I'd guess fox bait, if its where you are having the herts flush I suspect I know who and he does have some interesting ideas. I would say its not a neighbouring shoot enticing foxes as it simply doesn't work like that. After all they won't be as good as the pen at attracting foxes when they are full of birds.

I'd also hope they weren't poisoned but you never can tell so best to keep the dog away from them, only thing it does show is a lack of foxes if they haven't been cleared up

Nope, not where the flush will be al4x. Not miles away but different keeper for shizzle.

There are a few dog walkers that go through the woods (even though it's not a public footpath - you know the score) so I was more bothered about those dogs! Would a fox smell any poison?

Witch craft is common in your part of Hertfordshire, and pigs trotters are a well known bait for unsuspecting clayshooters, they could be used to entice shooters from other parts.

If for instance Twitchynic picked up the scent he could well turn up on yours or my doorstep very soon, if anything happens I will let you know, but be on your guard.

I've found stranger things in shoot woods in the past..

One time, myself and Stealth Stalker came across two kids tiny tears type dolly's hanging from a tree with a noose round their necks... They we're also dripping with blood

Never did get to the bottom of that one, and neither did the police.

there aren't many poisons you can use and they are all banned. Smelling wise it used to work on them so I guess not but I can't think of anyone local who would do it. Personally if you're worried its plastic gloves and a carrier bag and in the bin with them is best. But I'd lay money on them being simple fox bait if they are on a ride, any high seats overlooking them?
